steering issues

good morning everyone. im having some steering issues on my 2000 250 4x4. last week i took my truck to my mechanic to replace my upper and lower ball joints and new locking hubs because they were shot. before repairs my right side hub would not lock in and my steering wheel would not return to center after turning to the right or left. i had to wiggle my steering wheel back and forth in the staight away to get it to drive straight and after that it would still wonder. now that i have had the repairs done the 4x4 works great and the steering wheel returns to center, but im still feeling some wondering in the front wheels and im still hearing some banging in the front end when hitting bumps in the road. i havent had the truck aligned yet and the steering links and tie rod end seemed to be tight and in good condition. couldnt really tell if the gearbox has any slop in it. wondering if gearbox or power steering pump might be causing this problem. anyone else had these problems before? any input on this would be awsome!!! thanks guys Brandon

A tie rod end clunking is possible, but have you taken a good look at both your sway bar and Front Axle trac bar? Both the bars have bushing the wear, and the sway bar end links are very common on a Super-Duty.

yes we checked all that and seams to be all good and tight. since my last post ive replaced the steering gearbox and after that still felt a little sway but nothing alignment wouldnt fix. then on my way home tonight the front wheels were chopping around curves like my 4x4 was engaged and then made a sharp right hand turn onto another road and when my truck was going back to straight the steering wheel was bouncing back and fourth like crazy!!! so when i get home i lock in my new hubs and try out the 4x4 and nothing! everthing is new and the only thing left is something in the axle with the 4x4. im at a loss with this truck and this thing is killing my pocket. anybody out there had these problems? if so please help because my next step is taking it to the dealer. thanks brandon

It does sound like the hubs are locked. You should be able to reach around the wheel and turn the axle assembly behind the wheel, if the hubs are unlocked and in good working order.

I would take it back to the mechanic that fixed it in the first place and make him fix it right. Who put the steering box in? If it was you, you might have done something wrong.

If it was the mechanic again, get him to fix it.

Agreed.

Brandon,
Are they ESOTF or Manual hubs?

yes they are manual hubs. and yes i put the steering box in myself and marked everything and put it all back together the same way it came apart. its making me think something in front axle/4x4 combination. the mechanic that did the work only replaced ball joints and locking hubs. he did say that the right side hub was chewed up in side but that as far as he could go because he wasnt equiped to take the axles apart.

I had a similar problem on my 1996 F250 when a u-joint in the front axle shaft bound up and eventually broke, keeping the truck from turning when the axle shaft was in a certain position. It would make it hard to steer. I had a shop look at it and they installed a new steering box, which didn't fix the problem. It wasn't until the joint completely broke that I saw the problem my self and did the fix. Just a thought, something to possibly look at.

This is def the better dirrection. In my Super-duty the ujoint bound so much is made the locking hub stick and would not disengage.
