I have my 89 F150 regular cab 4 inch lift with 33s and with the 5.0 4WD and auto trans and i have a problem im not sure what it is. When i start the truck up cold its fine and when it starts getting warm, and not overheating, it starts leaking inside the cab. Not like a hose pouring out but more like a few drips onto the floor mats enough to make a little puddle and steam starts coming thru the front defroster vents and has a rusty water color and the smell is kinda like a rusty water type smell, i cant seem to figure out what it is and i didnt think it was heater core since its not green antifreeze? Anyone that has an idea let me know? I'm getting super frustrated with this LOL. Let me know Thanks Harry.
Heater core. Remove the glove box by squeezing in on both sides of it. Behind that is another panel that has screws in it. Behind that is your heater core. If it is leaking, it has gone bad. Your antifreeze will not remain green in an old truck for long, usually turns brown pretty quick. Sounds like you need a new heater core and a coolant flush.
And I'm not driving the truck until pretty much May of 2012 so summer will be around and i wont need the heat...can someone give me the detail on how to bypass it? Thanks again Harry
To bypass it you just unhook one hose from the heater core and the other from the engine and put the one that came off the core to the engine. It's pretty easy to replace the heater core, at least it was in my 92... might as well just go ahead and do that.
Just a quick response. Nothing else inside the passenger compartment of a vehicle has water running through it except the heater core. A quick bypass until you have time to fix it: 1. remove hoses from back of unit under hood and plug with bolts of proper size and clamp shut with an adjustable hose clamp. 2. pinch shut with with a small c-clamp. One issue you might not know about (I didn't) that most people don't realize is that vent tubing going to vents can and will grow mold inside of them. In you're case with rust colored steam coming out they will definately be nasty. I discovered this on a dodge daytona I had years ago that had clear wire re-enforced tubing going to vents. I only looked because I got deathly ill coming back from a long distance trip in which I had the ac on all the way. The tubing had a large amount of black mold growing in them which meant that I was inhaling mold spores the whole way, still have breathing issues. Short of removing and cleaning them I know of no quick fix other than spraying Lysol into air intake in cowl in front of windshield and running fan full speed. Good luck
