So I was looking at doing a crown Vic front suspension swap and an explorer rear end swap into my 55 f100. Looking at some websites I found a 98-06 crown Vic width is 78.2in and the 07-11 is 77.3in. I then looked up the ford explorer and it says the width is 70.2in. This is telling me with the same rims there will be an approx 7in width difference correct???? Has anybody used these two setups? If so I'm looking for some assurance before I tear into doing this swap.
That front trackwidth is the very reason many on here say it's a poor swap candidate. It means running very offset wheels to tuck them under the wheelwell. The rear would have to come from the same or similar donor, so that the wheels somewhat match.
Track width is not a good indicator of the fitment of a particular suspension setup into our trucks. It only describes the center-to-center width of the tread based on the OEM tires. It does not take into account wheel offset, turning radius arc, geometry, etc.
There's a saying that goes something like this...decisions are made with the heart and later justified with the brain.
I think that you will find some folks who couldn't resist the allure of a cheap bolt-in IFS so they took the leap and later found themselves looking for ways to compensate. Take a look at the thread Havi referenced...I did the research and posted some measurements on that thread. As I recall the CV IFS in a 53-56 F100 would put the wheel mounting flange at about 1-1/2 inside the fender lip...not much room for a wheel and tire.
