Last night my 79 F150 had its 351W eat a bearing. Second time this has happened in this truck. There is less than 20k km on this engine after a complete rebuild by a reputable shop. No oil pressure and engine is making a horrible clatter but it's not a rod knock like it had before. There are metal flakes on the dipstick and its leaving a puddle of oil where it didn't before So now I'm pulling the 351 out of my 87 and put the carb stuff on it and put it in the truck just so I have wheels again. And I'm going to complain (loudly) to the machine shop that rebuilt the engine. I don't need this right now with my wedding coming up soon and trying to get our houser ready....
Any ideas on what actually failed? My buddy says he thinks spun main bearing but I guess I won't know for sure until I get the engine out of the truck.
bet somebody put the bearing in backwards. If this is the second time the same bearing has gone out then the alignment of the crank and the bearing journals may be off.
It was a different engine that ate the rod bearing the first time. The shop only has a 4 month warranty but they told me to bring the engine in so they can have a look, they agreed that it shouldn't have failed already. It looks like it's only going to cost $46 for new gaskets to drop my 88 351 in. When do I have to change the distributor gear? That's only for roller cams, right? Not for EFI-carb swaps?
Just a thought, this engine had a HV oil pump. At extended periods of 3000 rpm plus, this wouldn't put all the oil in the top of the engine and starve the pump, would it?
