I just joined this site. I am looking at buying a 2007 Super Duty Supercab 6.0 diesel next week. This truck was traded in 2009 at 20Kand now. This truck has 40K miles and has pulled a fifth wheel. At 20K A injecter was replaced. 600 miles later , a injecter and fuel punp replaced. The dealer put new tires on and a alinement. He said the alinement is standed to do with new tires. Is this true?. The body is strait and clean. I keep my trucks for 10-12 years. Is there anything that I should be looking for to point out possible problems?. I have the information on the light recall off this fourm. The Warranty is gone in 2 months , then the possible add ons can start to help with mpg. What are they?. I now that I an asking a lot , but I need your help. I want to make a sound buy. PS woodwardbbq may not be normal , but comp. bbq is and I need a good truck to get there.
2 injectors and a fuel pump at only 40K, sounds like a money pit for the rest of the eng with the EGR, oil cooler, head gaskets. The only way I would get a 6.0 is if was given to me or I was rich and neither one will happen so I will never own one...JMO Get on the 6.0 forum and you will learn alot about how bad these eng are. But there are a few that have good luck with them. If you plan on doing any mods to it then there are a few things that are a must before the mods if you want some reliability. Do your homework. How much are they asking for the truck?
do u have someone wif a scangauge 2 or auto enginuity? if u have either one or u know someone who has, have them go with u and plug in to the truck. tat way, based on the readings u get, u can compare and in some cases, u can tell if anything is gonna go bad or not. if it seems like a bunch of things are gonna go bad, stay away from the truck.
the 6.0 is a tricky truck. it requires tip-top maintenance. i cannot stress tat enuff. all the guys on here will definitely agree wif me. if u slack on the maintenance schedule, ur dancing wif the devil.
however, given tat stuff breaks down so soon on tat 6.0, it would seem tat proper maintenance schedules were never followed by the previous owner. if so, i dont tink u wanna jump into a truck like tat. look around. i'm sure u'll find something even better than tis truck.
i'm sure the other guys will chime in wif their wisdom. i'm jus a regular guy who loves his Peppermint Pattie. tats my six-o. welcome to the forum again. stick around. u'll learn a lot bout the six-o like i have.

Do you know who replaced the fuel pump? Low fuel pressure would cause injector damage, which would end up in their replacement. But at 40k miles...I'm wondering if the fuel pressure has been checked? I'd adjust/update the regulator before I put a pump on the truck that young...but I check the simple stuff first (I'm a tight wad). If it was a dealership, they should have done the same...but it's worth checking into.

Yeah, why not check/adjust the alignment on the truck? Tires aren't cheap and a bad alignment would also be a safety issue. Not everyone does that, but it doesn't through up a red flag to me.

Which light recall are you talking about? As far as things to look for...I'd start with getting an Oasis report for the truck. It will list all work done on the truck at a Ford/Lincoln/Merc dealership. Even if it wasn't warranty (though it's still in effect for this truck) if a dealership did the work it would be listed. A CarFax isn't a bad idea either just to check to make sure the truck hasn't been wrecked or salvage rebuilt at some point. Here are a couple of other things I'd check for...
*White residue around degas bottle cap
*Color & condition of the coolant
*CAC boot condition
*EOT/ECT delta (would need something like a ScanGauge II to see this)
*FICM voltage (also need a ScanGauge)
*EGR cooler condition
*Oasis/CarFax report
*Cold starting issues?
*Hot starting issues?
*OEM bolts or studs (look for the bottom row of bolts/studs outside the rocker boxes)
*Aftermarket parts (intakes, exhaust, tuners)

What kind of numbers are you expecting? Most guys are getting between 15-20 mpg; depending on chassis (2WD/4WD), driving style, speed and fuel (summer fuel burns better, better mileage). If your expecting 25 mpg out of this truck...don't buy it; it ain't going to happen. Currently, for my truck I'm running a stock truck getting 18-19 mpg not exceeding 70mph on the highway. There are some tuners out there (SCT through either DP-Tuner or Gearheads) that may help you pick up a couple of miles per gallon. But I wouldn't expect allot for a 5k-7k pound brick on the highway. Their not Priuses.
A lot of people have had good reliability with them. There are things that are recommended though, if you buy a 6.0L.
When things fail they can get expensive - especially if they are allowed to go for an extended time period with something wrong.
Low fuel pressure will ruin injectors eventually. It is great that the fuel pump is new, but you need to install gauges if you buy it. That includes adding a pressure sending unit and a gauge for the fuel pressure (none of them came equipped with a fuel pressure sending unit).
Operating with low voltage can kill the fuel injection control module (FICM). Monitoring the system voltage and keeping the batteries/alternator is very important.
Coolant maintenance is very important. Some say that you should switch to the ELC EC1 coolant, but I have been happy w/ the OEM Ford Gold stuff - I just flush it every 50k miles. The oil cooler has some small passageways on the coolant side. It can plug up easily with rust/solids in the coolant system. Properly maintain the coolant fluid (don't mix brands, use a 50/50 mix with only distilled water, etc) and install a coolant filter and it should be fine. That said, an EC-1 rated ELC coolant is a more robust coolant worth considering! You do need to monitor the coolant (ECT) and oil (EOT) temps with an aftermarket gauge system (Edge CTS or the scangaugeII are the most popular ones that plug into the computer port). If the oil cooler plugs badly, it can cause a LOT of serious issues. When you monitor ECT and EOT, the EOT should not get more than 15 degrees higher than the ECT - or it is time to flush the system and change the oil cooler.
Keep the oil and filter changed (5k miles). Many folks prefer synthetic 5W40 oil (winter and summer). Keep the fuel filters changed (10k miles). Using a fuel additive doesn't hurt. Some swear by it, others say it isn't needed. Additives do help lubricity and cetane level - those are good things. Flush the tranny fluid and change the small external filter every 30k miles.
Use OEM filters.
If you are not willing to maintain the engine in this fashion, you might want to look for something else IMO.
Welcome aboard from another Iowa guy!
Is the truck at a Ford dealer?
I bought my 6.0 out of Cali back in May with 19 K on the clock, Ran the dog snot out of it all summer. End of Oct dropped an injector dealer in Owatonna got us back on the road in two hours. later that weekend on way home Sunday lost another one Took it to Dewey ( Know the diesel tecs there) replaced another one and the HFCM ( fuel pump & filter assembly) said low psi caused the failuer. I ask Rusty ( service writer I have known for 20+ years) about the rest of the injectors if low fuel psi damaged them He advised Ford would not replace them until they failed. Luckley for me base warranty is not up till June next year A week later one took a dump went back replaced it & the fpr (fuel psi regulator blue spring up-date) then two weeks later two more went at that point Ford agreed to replace the remaning ones. besides the mutipel trips I did not cast me a cent! My original deductable covered everything because it was re-occuring problem.
Latest trip was to Tulsa to watch my younger brother run in the Chili Bowl
Truck returned 21.8 by the lie o meter, hand calculated at the end of the trip was 19.7 for the overall trip so you can get decent MPG's out of these things without tuning them up. Just be carefull about turning it up!!!
If you decide to buy this truck buy the FORD extended warranty, Go on line you can get an idea of pricing.
Dont be afraid of the truck if it's what you need.
Keep on the 6.0 page & Read, Read then Read some more you will be glad you did
Oh Yea Dewey Ford is A great bunch of guys
