ecmmodulator?

Hi,

I'm trying to get something to allow my furnace fan to run continuously at low speed -- and speed up when the heat or a/c is on.

My local guy recommends something called ecMModulator. It's supposedly made by a company called Fanhandler inc. It seems to replace your control unit and your fan motor.

They HAVE a website -- fanhandler.com -- but they make it clear that they only want to deal with HVAC guys. That's OK, but i can't find out anything about the company.

Does anybody know anything about these guys -- or any other options. This unit is pretty spendy ( 1250 installed). The price is OK (well, it's not, but I would pay it)-- if it's not a piece of c**p.

Thanks,

hj

I was an HVAC tech many many years ago. Before the newer high SEER units came out, if you had a multi-speed blower motor, the rule of thumb was that the blower ran on low speed during heat cycles, and ran on medium or high during cooling cycles. On newer units with high SEER ratings, when the fan runs, how long it runs, and at what speed it runs are all important parts of getting more efficient.

That piece sounds expensive though, I'd bet you could do the same thing with some off the shelf relays and switches. I'm not sure why you would want to do that though. IMO you may end up circulating your warm household air through cold ducts in your attic or crawl space. You may cool your house by doing that.

It sounds spendy to me too -- that's why I want to make sure that if it's reliable.

The deal is that I've been advised to use a 'good' filter and keep the fan on continuously for family health issues. I find that the normal fan setting is too high for those times when the heater or a/c is off.

I'm don't want a DIY deal on this -- I want to have a unit that I know is reliable -- and something that a repair guy can deal with.

Thanks,

hj

Not an HVAC guy these days but if your blower motor is "older" it might not be up to a continuous duty cycle---could be very very wrong on that though.

Does this add-on thingy include a suitable motor along with the control?
