Yikes. Clearly if the tires are only rated to 50 psi you wouldnt put 80 psi in them no matter what ANYONE would say.
Ford also claims a certain gwvr, but if you decide to put some small tires with say a 1500# load rating you obviously wouldn't think your gvwr would be the same?
Right?
Exactly. Soon as you put a tire with a lower PSI and weight rating then that spec'd by the manufacturer, you lessen the load you can safely haul/tow.
My tires are rated for 80 psi.
Door tag says 65 psi.
I run 70 up front and 60 in the rear because the motor obviously weighs more than the truck bed. When I bought my tires I noticed how the **** were wearing to help me maintain the pressure that kept the tread the flattest. Similar to the chalk test. If I'm gonna haul anything substantial I'lkl air up the rears. I dont see why poeple run the same pressure when trucks are so loppsided with weight distribution.
I consider the "recommended" air pressures just that a recommendation. My truck, tires and life I'll do it my way. Im not gonna wear out tires prematurely because someone told me the "right" way.
Tire pressure should be adjusted to the conditions. Not only load, but that is major factor. My sedans have recommended tire pressure on fuel door with variations of the load and a note
"For speeds above 100 mph add 10 psi"
No fuel door on my Ford trucks.
What? Are you suggesting drivers should THINK and make their own decisions??? That is not acceptable by any jury in any American state. Nobody can ever be held responsible for their own actions....
And it would require owners to learn and understand something. As can be seen by many posts, that would be asking a lot for some folks.
But you are right. Too bad it is no longer acceptable.
From the tires I have been using, I think that beside cheap trailer tires, you can't buy multiply tire for last 30 years. They use steel mesh in single layer to get the strength combined with better flexibility.
That is why new generation tires can run on low pressure for pretty long time before they disintegrate.
The ratings are still given in multiply as it usually takes over a generation to drop old habits.
Than everybody should know there is nothing wrong with riding on the max pressure the tire allows. That saves fuel with drop of comfort. I hear that some Honda owners trying to beat economy records inflate 35 psi rated tires to 50 psi with no ill effects.

I wish more poeple were thinking for themselves. Maybe then some of the non essential Americans could go to see Dorothy and ToTo, and leave this great country for the smarter ones to enjoy.
