312,000 mile reported 302
Hey guys I ran into a guy today with a 1993 Ford F150 4x4 302 auto transmission original owner and the truck had 312,000 miles. Never a rebuild not one single problem with this truck. He even showed me the odometer with and under the hood and it showed 312,000 miles on the odometer but it sure didn't look like that on the body. It kinda did under the hood but still looked pretty clean. Do you believe this. If this is true I think the 302s on our lot need to be fixed up real good so we have a dang good Daily Driver.

I bought my '96 in '01 from the original owner/friend of mine, and it has 240k on the 302 and still runs strong. The only thing I ever had to change was the entire body! Slid off of the road one night into a ditch and bent the frame. Picked up a flooded out '96 at auction (Katrina victim) and changed everything into the new body. I love these trucks because they're cheap to maintain, no note and the insurance is super low.

its possible to go that many miles on a gasser. most will never see past 200k of normal use, many fail at 100k of hard use. but with regular oil changes with quality oil and a nice easy life on highways they can last 300k or more. problem is, of all people claiming that many miles, more are lying about an overhaul in the history vs engines actually making it that far.

i can say for a fact that the van has true miles on it, because i am the one that did the 168 oil changes, 16 trans fluid and filter changes, 16 tuneups, 3 power steering boxes, 2 power steering pumps, 2 water pumps, 3 heater cores, 10 coolant changes, and 3 sets of universal joints, 6 sets rear and 4 sets front brakes on it. i have never had the engine or trans open.

I just snatched out the 302 in my 1989 F150. It had somewhere around 290,000 miles. I bought it from the original owner, the odometer was at 95,000 and he said it had already wrapped over once with him. And it wrapped over again with me, and was at 90,000 when I replaced the engine. It burnt 1 qt of oil every 5,000 miles. But I could tell It was tired
When I swapped out the 302 for the 351w I also swapped for a cluster with a tachometer.

Ive personally had a 89 f150 4x4 with a 302 5 speed, 3.55 gears and it had 485,000 kms on it when I sold it, and I still see it ripping around now and again. That was 6ish years ago, and I bet the owner put another 100k on it! Damn thing got over 20mpg (canadian, what is that, 17, 18 american?) and could spin the 33 inch tires on command.
Not too get too off topic, but thats one reason I think the 302 is a superior engine in a f150, when used for light duty. In my experience they just keep going and going.

My 302 had 206k when I rebuilt it, but it ran awesome when I pulled it out of the parts truck. My grandpa drove it most of it's life and kept the oil changed every 3k miles. Still had great cross hatching in the cylinders, didn't burn any noticable amount of oil in 3k miles, all the bearings looked great, etc. IMO didn't need a rebuild, but I had it out of the truck and was changing the cam and heads on the stand anyways, might as well refresh it. I wouldn't doubt it could have gone another 100+k easily.
The 5.0L is a great little engine. Reliable and have decent power for being such small displacement. Not too hard to make more power with either.
