Hood Scoop Question

Hey guys and gals,I was watching a show on one of the cable nets and they were outfitting a newer Ford with a supercharger and a mach 1 hood. The outfit they potrayed had the air into the scoop then routed back into the hood directed to the stock air intake location. What I'm wondering is if you have heard of a slim scoop for a 79?And if not,if I were to fab something of my own directly to the air cleaner how would I keep water from sucking in?

Hood Scoop Question

Don't run in the rain, standard proceedure for trailer queens.

For anything you want to run somewhere besides So Cal you can put the hood scoop on so that the opening points backwards towards the windshield. There is a high pressure zone at the base of the windshield although later model aerodynamics could have reduced this effect. I didn't see the show so I don't know how they had their setup configured. This can still suck in water. The factory setups I saw like this had drain holes for the water. You lost some air but it also expelled the water.

The guys down in performance modifications might have some ideas also.

Hood Scoop Question

there are two possible answers to consider when putting a scoop on. so consider this question: will air really be forced into the engine at a rate that makes a difference? in not then mount the scoop but don't cut the hole. remember that the fresh air intake will only improve performance at speed so if you drive it to work every day it is for appearances anyway. the scoop may help 1/4 mile times but it won't improve around town driving and in really cold weather can actually hurt as it will cool the carb too much and cause icing. if you answered yes to the question then make sure that the hole in the hood is smaller than the scoop. that is how car makers do it. the hole in the hood is made smaller and the scoop is not usally sealed tight at the back. the reason is simple centrifical force/energy/and gravity. the water traveling over the hood and into the scoop will want to flow in a straight line and the air will make the turn through the hole. the water will not make the turn into the hole at speed. you will also need a couple of small drain holes in the air cleaner base for any water that does. hawkrod
