I want to replace the 8ft bed on my 1977 f250 4X4 . I've got a 1977 f150 2X4 parts truck that has a very good bed. After some inspection and discussion, I see that the 250 has a much narrower frame (around 21" inside channels)so the bolt holes don't match. It does appear however that the bed could be drilled out to fit the narrower frame and the plug the extra holes with dummy bolts. Also there is the difficulty of cutting in square holes that hold the stove-bolt head in place. any suggestions or advice?
You should be able to redrill the bed without a problem. Just make sure everything is lined up good before you drill. You can probably even find some rubber plugs to fill the other holes with instead of bolts.
When I replace my bed, I'm not going to use the carriage bolts with the square inserts. I've purchased some regular bolts so that I can put a wrench on them when installing and removing them. That way if they need to be taken off in the future, it's easier.
The only downside I see, is that you might trip over the head sticking up in the bed but that shouldn't be a big problem.
OR, drill the holes shank size and use a triagle file to notch 4 light corners in each hole. Doesn't take much with a good file and the carriage bolts won't spin.
actually, if you drill the holes the size of the flat on the carraige bolts, you can snug them up from underneath (have a friend hold the top) then give them a good smoke with a hammer, and it will set the square into the metal..... worked on the 12 ga floor in my utility body... should work on the stock boduy
