I thought i finally had everything worked out with the alternator. EVERYTHING in the charging/starting system is brand new!
If i get my battery charged everything runs great. But after shes heated up or after shes ran for awhile, i shut off and try to start again and all i get is a womp.. womp...
I have chilten manuals like no ones bussiness. Not one shows the exact wiring for the alternator.
When I bought the truck a couple of the wires off the alternator are clipped. But the main red/black line, and the white carb choke wire are still good. This is all i can explain w/o pictures.
I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP GUYS!
- wiring diagrams
- advice
- whatever you've got!

Because there are too many variations.
Like Bill says, what EXACTLY are you working on?
Truly, no one knows what you have (since you go on to say it is hacked) but they could tell you what you should have.

Depending on the exact symptoms, and you need to give us a better understanding of what happens, you may not have an alternator problem. Again, depending on the symptoms you may have too much initial ignition timing as that can cause hard starting when the engine is warm.
Is it safe to assume that your alternator has a fan on the front and no external regulator?
Does it have two plugs or does it have wires connected to threaded terminals on the back?

Yes, it has a fan, 2 connectors, and internal regulator.
I assume you mean the black/orange charging wires going to the fender mounted solenoid.
If that light green/red wire is not connected you will get no charge at all.
No. The two black/orange wires splice into a fusible link and that single wire connects to the solenoid.
It connects to the same terminal as the + battery lead, so to simplify the schematic the solenoid is left out of the charging system diagram.

Do you know what the voltage is when the truck is running? Should be 13.5-14.5v at the battery when running.
If it is, then your charging system is working and you have a different issue.
Jim, if he has an ammeter the circuit is a little different. Also in 86 the whole truck gets it's power through the alternator fusible link. This isn't in color like yours, but here is the 86 stuff. This the 460, but the circuits other than the choke heater are the same.

Okay, I see the splice and the shunt.
Why is the ammeter on the wrong side of the load?
I hope that Bryan can post some pictures of what's really going on.
Maybe he has a multimeter and can tell if he is charging or not.
And, as Gary said, the hot start issue could be as simple as too much ignition advance.
I'm reading the mail but think the next step is, like David said, put a meter on it and find out if it is charging. We'll know which path to go down then.
