Hey just bought an old intake manitfold so what I was woundering was it need's cleaning up I have used a parts washer on it. And took all the grease off but the inside the runners have some rust does anyone no how too get cleaned out? Thanks
You will probably have to use a small wire wheel on a drill. You could sand blast it but most would not because of the chance of sand left in the intake. How bad is it, are there flakes of rust or just stained.
thanks for answer well for what i can see down there just rust stained that i can see. I want to use it because money is tight right now for me.Plus I dont think the wife would let me go out and send 200 or 500 for a new one. So I have too make this one work till I save some money.
I would love to see some pictures of the truck and the (Torino)
One other way you could go is to have a machine shop "hot tank" the intake , that would clean it up really well . I dont have any idea how much it would cost so you may want to shop around . I feel that the wire wheel and drill will work ,but it is limmited in that it may not be able to reach inside the intake in some of the smaller areas , Just a suguestion .

Muratic acid eats rust but it's a PITA to work with because it will eat other things too. I have used throwaway aluminum serving pans as de-rusting vats with good results before, don't get it on the concrete unless you want it etched! After the acid bath I always rinse completly with water and dry with compressed air. It's important to get the part primed right away tho as all the pores are open and new rust will start very quickly with no protection.
Jon sorry about not getting back too you but long weekend. Thanks about the info, I have been using me angle die grinder and a wire wheel on the top of the maninfold it looks way better then befor now.Well what do you expect for what I paid for it. They say it came out of a 63-64 Galaxie it has a built in oil filler tube right into the maninfold never seen one like this befor.
I will keep wire wheel the maninfold right now. As for seeing pic's of the car and truck well there not in the best of shape right now the Torino is down too bare metal doing a complete restore but with some modern parts,as for the truck paid 400 for it so you can know what it looks like. But it is in good shape going to pick up the rebulit motor for it maybe next week they said it might be ready. So the front end will be coming off. The inner fenders are shot found some at the junk yard GALVANIZE one's but the only thing is the hinge part where it bolts too is on the other side thought that if I get the hinges that go with the inner fenders it would work what do you think?Well been going out the mouth here sorry. Thanks

70fordguy I have used that on my gas tank for the truck. I did think of that but there is some parts that I dont no will take the acid.Have ever seen a maninfold with a built in oil filler well this on does and a PCV right into it. Must of been one of the early one's. Have you used that on any other parts.

Hottank won't do it. I have one that is the same way. It was greasy and rusty inside and out. Had it hottanked($10) Grease is gone but rust is still there. Sand blast, or bead blast it. If you do that, you have to remove the tin cover on the bottom, or sand will get trapped and come out in your engine. After blasting, wash it down very well inside and out, blow it out with water and then blow it dry with air. I got an aluminum one so I didn't have to mess with this other one.
