I'm new to diesels and I just traded an 07 5.3 Silverado for an 08 F250 Lariat. Love the looks of the 08 and the ton of room and the power of a diesel. Had it 2 days and then the rad started leaking. Had it replaced free of charge. Now i'm worried about the DPF. Ive read that if the tailpipes are black then you might be running into problems. I took some pics of my pipes just wondering what your opinions are. Also if the dpf is plugged or partially plugged would I be able to re-neg on the deal? And finally how do you know when its in regen mode and about how often does this happen?
How many miles on the truck? Any warranty left? If so, you can have the dealer look at in in relation to the tips.
Black tips is a sign of a broken DPF or the result of a previous owner running the truck with a DPF delete in place.
Unless your state has some sort of buyers remorse, best you can probably do is have the dealer look into it.
As you get used to the truck, you'll start to notice the differences when it's in regen and not in regen by the sound and the way it performs. On mine, I have absolutely no delay when I punch it whereas on other trucks they seem to have more delay. Not sure why that is. Other then sound and feel, at the start of a regen it will briefly display Cleaning Exhaust. If you missed it, you can tell by scrolling through the Msg Center. Press Setup followed by Reset. It will cycle through a bunch of msg's. If the vehicle is in regen, one of the last ones will say "Cleaning Exhaust" or similar. There's another msg that could be displayed called "Drive Until Clean" which will appear on the msg center. This is a result of the vehicle not going into regen in a while due to too many short trips or turning it off without it completing enough of the regen cycle.
i have no link for the pics there on my computer. do these reply's count as posts?
Yes.
However, if you have this image link you can use that to point to a picture on another site, like photobucket. After 25 posts, you should have this image link available when posting.
Okay I put the pics on my website Red Line Coatings - Home under the pictures folder. I appreciate if you guys could look at them and give me your opinion. Also there is some road sand and salt because I do live in Northern Ontario.

I think so based upon when you took the pics and weather conditions. I don't see alot of build up or anything if you ask me.
Has your coolant level stabilized since the radiator change? That is probably going to be your best bet of an issue...eating coolant. Usually a white smoke...not to be confused with a cold morning start though.
tips look normal to me, mine are pitch black...I blame IDP!
Mine too! I blame Spartan. I complained about it one day in the truck and the tuner told me to shut up! It said....."Shut up! THIS....IS... A DIESEL!!!!
