Really it isn't that hard. I did fumble installing the JIC adapter on the front port, but beyond that the job went really well. I guess it depends on who installed the plugs at the factory and if they are corroded or not. Breaking it loose was pretty easy on mine.
i put the socket on mine and they rounded off the shoulders. so i pulled the brackets put a grip on them and then used a hammer to knock it loose. they where bad tight.

After loosening the belt, its 4 bolts (13mm?) that hold AC compressor bracket. It should get out of the way enough just shifting forward. If not, 4 (10mm) bolts will remove AC comp so you can lay it off to the side and completely remove bracket. With 3 more minutes of 'work' - you can have a tremendous amount of additional access.
My favorite tool for these plugs is a quality 6" crescent wrench (if I don't have the 'correct' square-head socket -Lol!).
Not sure if everyone is aware of these spline sockets by Craftsman or not. They work amazing on just about all types of fasteners (6 point, 12 point, 4 point, 8 point). I bought a set of SAE and Metric for something like $15 a set.
I do wish they would make them in 1/4 drive as well!

Nifty! Too late to forward to wifey for Christmas tho.
I have the ratcheting wrench version. Only used them 5-6 times, but they grip tight and no rounded corners yet. Once I got my SAE on a metric bolt and it worked, IIRC it was the 1/2 on a 13mm.

Splines are amazing. We use splines on F16's but craftsman never had them so we had to get Snap-on or Matco. Looks like i'll have to go buy 2 sets.

Yes, I had to buy spline wrenches from Snap-on when I was working on a 757 cargo conversion. They were spendy units and I still have them. They are odd sizes, but every now and then they get used as a reminder to how much they cost me.
Just an update. I removed the fuel bowl, both relays and thier bracket. I do have room to work, but the 5/16 socket doesn't fit and the 11/32 seems too large or it is slipping. Rail plug is very tight. Tried an adjustable, but cant get a good enough bite on it. Soaking in pb again, called a buddy that is a mechanic and has 4pt sockets at work. He is coming by later, when all else fails I will result to the vice grips. Wish me luck. Did need a magnet to get two of the nuts from the relay bracket retrieved out from under the HPOP, which I managed to drop. Just don't think International could have made things any tighter. Have a Sears/Craftsman Hardware store very close, but they didn't have any 4pt sockets.
They are 8 point sockets. You will have a problem finding 5/16" ones though. I did find a S-K 5/16" socket in 8 point. Can you get a normal 5/16" open end wrench on it? That will work too, you may just need to get a little leverage on it.

Yup, i guess i got lucky with my install as well, no pb soaking at all. Only problem i had was installing the JIC into the d/s rail, next to turbo.
UPDATE
Well my mechanic buddy showed up with 9/16 and larger 8 pt sockets, I said this isn't gonna work. We used an 8 mm 12 pt on the rear and it came right out. Front is still in. We tried about everything 5/16, 11/32, and 8mm 12 pt sockets, and a cresent wrench, looks like the corners are about rounded off, so next step is to loosen AC compressor and remove the bracket. Guess I am now going to go with a vice grip. Never could get an open end wrench in at the correct angle to get a good bite.
I am now looking at an easily accessed HPOP with 196,xxx miles sitting right in front of me and thinking while I'm in it this far........ What do you guys think replace the HPOP even though it is good?
