Hi desert bronco! Just for future reference, I think you'll find you'll get more and better responses if you try to use complete words in your questions. I understand shortcuts when texting, but this is an International discussion forum, and some guys just aren't there with you on those shortcuts.
Try to be as clear as you can, and you'll be rewarded with the same.
Do you have a quad shock, or single shock setup on your Bronco?
Also, what is your setup and intended driving? Heavy off-road? Do you have a lot of extra gear in the Bronco? (ie. some guys have their Broncos weighing upwards of 6500lbs).
On mine, I have the mid-grade Monroe shocks from Schucks/O'Reilly. (The yellow ones). They've held up really well for over 25,000 - 30,000 miles of highway and off-road. My Bronco's pretty light, and I don't wheel it too hard either.
I imagine there are much better ones out there, but these have served me nicely.
i have 2 shocks on each side in front and 2 total on the rear. i don't think there is anything aftermarket on it right now. shes a 95 302 e4od.
i mainly use it for trails and to get into the backwoods for camping. the terrain is pretty moderate to me (but some off those full throttle guys prob find it easy) not trying to build her for heavy mud sense it barely rains where i live.
I'm just looking for something better than the stock equivalent that's on there now and that wont get trashed in a year.
Two on each side in the front is the Quad-Shock setup.
Sounds about like you use yours like I use mine.
In that case, a couple steps up from "valu-brand" at the auto parts store would probably do you alright, and not break the budget.
Another thought is that if you want to step it up a few more notches in quality, you can always eliminate the auxiliary shock from the front and just run a single higher quality shock on each side. Lots of guys do, as they find the quad shock setup too stiff for every day driving.
thanks man i'll have to run into town a bit later and price em because what u suggested sounds pretty good. i think ill keep that quad set up i kinda like it. even if they arn't the best shocks at least it will be an upgrade and i can put the extra cash into more parts
I have a 78 with the quad shock setup i had 2 stock shocks and i took those off the radius arm mounts. Not i have Rancho all around and they aren't too stiff but it can be a rough ride with a lot of small bumps like going over railroad tracks. I was taking them off to try making it softer and it made a slight difference. I haven't really wheeled it yet since i just fixed the steering. If i could find a place i would go. But so far the small amount of offroading i have done it did well. Ranchos are pretty pricey but as far as i know they are good quality. If you really want a large selection and varying prices look for Bilsteins. Apparently they are the cream of the crop but too spendy for me.
KYB monomax in the rear, I don't recommend them for anything but towing. I have bilstein 5100s in the front, single shock setup for now, tad too soft for offroad but great for on-road.
Had rough countries, I use to think the rears were too soft but I sort of miss them, quad rough country nitros in the front were on the hard side, they were good strong shocks though.
Love my Bilsteins so far, but I've not really got a chance to play with them yet
Are those stock height bilsteins ErrorS? How much were they?
Edit: Nevermind i looked them up $175.18 after tax for me. Free shipping for 2 of them... Maybe in the future i will get these. Would you recommend the same for the rear too? More looking for a softer ride, i can't do a lot of off roading right now so that wouldn't really be an issue. ATM i have Ranchos all around with the secondary shock removed from the radius arm mount. It softened the ride ever so slightly but it is hardly noticeable.
Honestly, I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the Bilsteins yet so don't go out and spend $175 hoping to find that new car feel in your Bronco. My truck has some bad rattle and it makes bumps seem harder than they are.
It took me months to realize how I really felt about the KYBs.
I can't really ooffer an opinion on shocks, as I have only driven my Bronco less than two months, and I "think" the shocks on it are stock. The ride is fine, but I have not done any serious off roading yet, just some puddle jumping and field running to test the 4x4 system. I agree with the above recommendations of going up a notch or two in quality if you are not happy with your current shocks. Especially based on your intended usage.
I like the Bilsteins. They ride a little stiff, then again I've got E load rated tires on the truck. For now. It should ride a lot nicer once I get some wider, lighter, C rated tires. Bilstein makes good stuff.
Ah good input. I don't really know yet, i am more getting an idea for the future cause this truck is going to be a long time in the making of a rebuild... So far i have the starting system pretty much re-done and it still gives me issues, and i am working on the steering. I have a new stabilizer shock (Monroe) and new Moog bushings on my track bar. Made a world of difference for those working on similar stuff. Now i am sorting out some other small things like a weird noise in my steering column when i turn the wheel right.. Kind of a grinding rattley thing it isn't a big concern cause it doesn't sound like something that could break or seize up i just figure it would get annoying. I am also working on ball joints and tie rod ends all from Moog but i haven't ordered them yet die to having to do a bit of research in terms of what i actually need to buy. Then i have been looking into shocks to see what i could want for the future when i get to suspension. There is a lot to do between now and then for now though it is small stuff.
great input guys =) i think im leaning towards the rancho 5000's mid prices and my dad has them on his bronco and they r pretty nice, need to go off road in it before i decide for sure
Ya taking it off road will help with the final decision, as far as i have seen with the limited amount i have done my shocks aren't miserable but i would like taller softer ones.
