as a continuance of my streak of crappy luck , i was on the site yesterday at 1:15 p.m. and my laptop crashed ............ well it seems that somehow i picked up some companies computor repair / anti virus crap from here and it sent it into spazzomatic attack . so beware as i would've assumed this place was a safe harbor !!!!!!!!!!!
the same thing happened to me at about the same time. it is a tricky virus that hides and disables a bunch of things then offers to fix them for you at a cost. very decieving.
Same thing hit me a month or so ago. It hit when I opened a car for sale attachment here. The repair shop had to replace my lap top operating system with a new Windows 7 version and I still haven't figured out all the features. Sometimes it's just easier to use the phone. Stu
Same thing here but I am lucky my anti virus stopped it. It did kick me off of here though and I had to reboot. There is someone out there in cyberland trolling on here (this site) looking for unprotected computers. So be aware and have good protection.
In my case the bug gave me the same bs about purchasing projection. But when I tried to run my AVG antispy program to see if the thing was a germ or something on the up and up it prevented the AVG from running. That's when I knew I was in trouble. The guy at the shop suggested I switch over to a Linux (sp?) operating system since spyware doesn't attack that, but I'm not that smart. As he was describing it my brain went to mush. Stu
Me too... Now having to try and figure out how to see / use all my pic and documents. I can't see them anywhere in the folders, but I have a software that I can see them in the folder... Going to have to bring it to the Geek Squad this afternoon... So I'll be down for a few days
Just so you guys hear from someone who didn't get it... here's the only things I am doing to protect myself... Work: Symantec Corportate (forced on me by my evil overlords) and using firefox with adblock and flashblock - I see no ads (not a paid subscriber) and have no ad type viral issues.
Home: no antivirus (I'm a computer admin so we run with our ******* out all the time - our version of living on the edge) and firefox with adblock and flashblock - again no ads for me and no ad based viral issues.
Yesterday my antivirus popped up a window twice while logging into FTE, advising that it was blocking a phishing/malware URL from loading. Using Kaspersky AV
You can keep your Norton/Symantec product. I had it on the old pc and got tired of talking to people in India. But in fairness, sounds like there's new germs coming at us all the time which challenges anybody's software to stay on top of. Stu
Yeah, it got me too. I managed to kill it, but my favorites folder, my desktop, and my START menu are blank and I can't figure out how to get them back. It really stinks because I just got this bucket running right again after it sneezed a hard drive. I'd really rather just USE it and not have to WORK on it! That's what the truck is for.
Most of those having problems are using either Chrome, or FireFox. Those that are using IE haven't had the problem. I'm using IE8 and have had 0 problems........
I managed to get one of the fake virus attacks a couple of months ago...a trojan horse of sorts. It presents a popup screen saying you have a virus, and that you can buy the solution by "clicking here". A total scam!
I found that Malwarebytes(which is free) in conjunction with the free Ad Aware software usually helps to find and eliminate these things. The one that I got was particularly bad because it had built in features to disable all of the popular virus protection/removal tools. I had to run in safe mode without networking for the first pass....then safe mode with networking to update all of the tools (Malwarebytes specifically), then I was able to re-run all of the scans in normal mode.
