Question building a "prerunner"

a couple years ago i found a kit to give my f100 18" of front wheel travel. in the gallery i found a '69 4x4 in California with 15" on each corner; a really sharp truck. why is it called a "prerunner"? sounds/looks like a lot of fun. is a truck like this mainly used for sand and hard-ground off road racing?
Thanks! Luke.

They call them Prerunners because they are used to check out (or pre- run) the off road racing courses such as Baja before the actual race. They are set up with increased travel to handle the terrain at higher speeds. But are comfortable enough to be used as a daily driver.
