I have a F150 XLT Larriat (4X4) with a 302 and a 5 speed transmission titled as an 89 but Dec.88 manufactured. I was wondering how I might find out if the transmission is the S5-42 ZF 5 speed or the M5od Mazda. I was also wondering if there is a way to tell the transfer case I have (13-45 or 13-56) I figured out that it has 3.55 gears by the owners manual and the VIN if that helps. I hear that the Mazda is the light duty of the two so I am expecting it to be the Mazda. thanks in advance, James
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Oct-02 AT 04:12 PM (EST)]The tranny code for a 5-speed manual is 'M'.The tranny code for the 5-speed manual-HD is 'Z'.A vehicle built after September would be a next year model.Your truck was built 12/88(December),so that would make it a 1989 model.Hope this helps.
All cars/trucks are built the previus year of there model year. For example if you have a 2000 F-150 it would have been built in 1999. It's like that with all the manufacturers and companies. So if you ever need a part just tell them the year that is on the title!!
There were not many ZFs put in the F-150s. The mazda is a very weak tranny, not very appropriate in an F-150. The transfer case is stamped, Yours should be a 13-56. It says it on the bottom. Thats the better one of the two. The mazda has fins on the side that are straight left/right and up/down. The ZF's are diagonal.
Primary rig is Green Thunder:
95' F-150 XLT 4x4, 302, 5 spd, MSD 6A, Flowmaster Exhaust, Sunroof, Clear corners w/ Diamond headlights, CD player with 2 10" subs and some 32" BFG Muds .
The new models are built starting in the month of August, not September as I stated before. Okay,so this means 1988 model year vehicles could have had a build date anytime between 8/87(August) through 7/88(July),a 1989 model year vehicle would've been built between 8/88 through 7/89,etc.....an even easier way to tell what year a Ford vehicle is,is to simply look at the 10th postion on the VIN.It will be a letter.'K' would mean 1989 model year,'L' would be a 1990, 'M' a 1991,etc.My 1990 Bronco was an early model-it has a 8/89 build date.My 1994 F-250HD 4x4 was a late model. It's original build date was 7/94,right before the cut off, when the 1995's came out.
