Hey guys I searched the forums to try and find the answer to my bouncing speedometer problem but they only confused me. My speedometer will every so often bounce around when driving and even while sits still. Is this the VSS?
Thanks
VSS is a cheap enough part to throw at it and see. However, I would look closely at the wiring, could have a chafed wire somewhere that is changing the values, check battery connections and conditions as well.
I realize you aren't asking me, but the VSS was likely the one in the top of the rear differential, one bolt pop it out, it is a magnetic pickup type to get pulses from the tone ring so being a magnet, ferrous metals would adhere to it over time.
I replaced my VSS as instructed, jumping speedometer needle went away for a week or so, now it is back. I checked the connector and the wiring and everything looks ok. Could it be a cheap VSS as I bought it at Auto Zone?
When I cleaned the speed sensor on my truck, during a differential overhaul, not even knowing it was the cause of my jumping speedometer (above 55mph), it stopped the jumping. It was indeed covered with metal filings.
