Ok, new reg, tightened all connections, cleaned all connections also. Same thing. this time turned on lights, heater, wipers. Checked Volts and it was at 10.5 - 11. So I'm guessing its the ALT. will take it back and have it bench tested I guess. I did re-check belts too.
I love it when you go to fix something and cause another issue! atleast with these old cars/trucks, usually its easy to correct.
Well on the bright side you have a new reg. , you know the connections are all tight and clean . And best of all you know you got alot of help from everybody on here.. not that bad a deal

And he gets to take it back off the truck!!
They just dont make em like they used to.
Ford made that style alternator for alot of years. They didnt tear up, much.
Its a re-built. Can't have them test on truck. In process of restore and can't get truck to them. I ripped it off the truck and will have them bench test today.
And you guys are right. I owe a grattitude of thanks to all who posted assistance. I will take you all out for a beer!
ok guys, need your help again. wiring is not my strong suit. Had atl bench tested. Tested good, 13.5 V coming out. Ok, now I'm wondering if I have the wires hooked up right. I got the ground and hot wire. But there is a plain white wire going to the "fla" lead on alt and a white and blue strip going to the black coated lead. all connections are greased and tight.
Anyone know what wires to what leads? I put on truck and getting same results as before. Getting frustrated!
Wiring harness is original.
checks in the mail to anyone that can help!!
Sorry, my bad. white is going to Field post. white and blue going to post with black on it. power going to red post, ground from block going to grnd post.
thats all there is.
sorry, just frustrated over the whole deal. and it doesn't help that I live in MN and its freaking cold out. my garage is not heated, makes for a "not so fun" time.. LOL..
Another (stupid) question, lol, when you changed the ALT did you put the old pulley on the new ALT? or did the new one come with pulley? are they the same size?
I put the old pully on the new alt. it is perplexing. I will try the swap of the wires, and see if I can tighten up the belt more.
no question is a dumb question. all questions welcome..
Hey, thanks for the pic. Looks like i have mine set up like yours.
Going to try to switch wires tonight and try tighting the belt some more. if that don't work.. have no clue. Also will try putting the volt meter on the leads coming off the alt while running to see if it is producing the 13.5 at alt. If ti is, then its my wiring.
Which means I will just break down and buy new wiring harness and do that. Wanted to wait until summer to start that, but oh well...
what rpm did O'reilly's check the out put voltage ? If they only tested it at 1500 or more then it won't show the low voltage at idle. You might want to ask them at what rpm the alt. is supposed to "excite" and produce the required voltage. When you checked the voltage coming off the alt, did you check it at the stud that the lead to the reg bolts to? At the same lead at the reg, and the point that the lead that comes from the reg to the soleniod and from the one side of the alt. to the other ? One other question that come to mind after rereading this thread, is the charge of the battery. If it is low and at idle it's gobbling up all the voltage. It just seems really odd that this all is happening after an alt. R&R
