When i start my truck up and get out onto the rode while accelerating my check engine light flashes. once i get about 60 mph hte light stays on. now i was driving on the interstate in missouri yesterday at 70 mph and it was on for awhile then it turned off. my parents and i think that the light is just REALLY sensative cause we can't think of anything that would make it flash/turn on. my oil is normal (although i have to add some every once in awhile) and my tranny is fine, and my heat stays around the cold. the truck seems pretty fine despite its 8-12 mpg. any ideas? im not ready to lose my $1600 i paid for that truck (thats all my money haha).
could spark plugs be causing that? im thinking i'll replace sparks next weekend.
With your fuel comsumption like it is and the check engine light coming on, I was wondering if your O2 sensor might be bad. But before replacing it, try to pull the trouble codes for your truck. If you go to www.batauto.com , they give a pretty good description of how to pull the codes and what the codes mean. On the homepage, there is a pull down menu for trouble codes with all kinds of makes of vehicles. Another option is to go to someplace like autozone, who will check your codes for free! I hope this will help you a little bit. Drop us a line and let us know what happened.
Like others said, this is most likely the oxygen sensor. On late 80's vehicles, the check engine light came on for hardly anything except a bad O2 sensor. They can be a royal pain to change if they are stuck, so be patient!
