88 tach troubles

so the tach in the 88 has started acting up. it acts like its looseing a signal or reads wrong. it'll do it randomly while driveing or sitting still at any rpm. havent looked at it yet just lookin for an opinion on where to start first

first check the plug at the sensor has a good connection. then remove the sensor and clean it. if those two things don't work, you may need a new sensor.
