Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew how many pounds these struts need to be rated at. Our local RV surplus store has the right size, but they are rated at 168lbs each. Are these heavy enough? I cant seem to find what these are rated at
Thanks Stewart. Yeah, these would be the same size as the ones for the 4x2, but they say they are rated for 168lbs. Sounds like that would be heavy enough, but then again, these are heavy gates!! And have to take into consideration the lift point. They sell them for $7 a piece, so I guess I cant go wrong!

They don't cost much for stock 2wd ones ......get those.
Interesting....I just purchased a 2002 X 2wks ago and already hit my head on the open hatch. It's a 4x4, so maybe I need different strusts, why would the 2x4 version use different ones?
The 2 wheel drive Ex's sit lower to the ground, so they put a longer strut on them to get the gate up higher. If you put the them on a 4 wheel drive Ex, it will lift the gate higher so us tall people wont bang our head!
And the ones cited in Stewart's thread link are much taller than the 2X4 struts. The super tall ones are very nice and quite tall. I'm very pleased I added them.
Just measure them and you can order them on eBay. I found some pretty cheap with a lifetime warranty that lifted the same height as the 2wd. I have a 4wd and the difference is great!

I heard this advice over and over again. So when I replaced mine, I did the 2WD struts. My Ex is lifted about 6" over stock sitting on 35s. The 2WD struts were the wrong idea. I almost have to jump to close the hatch. The kids have to climb on the bumper.

It is a great idea. Just think before you buy.
Definitely something to consider, but being 6'3" it is something I need to get done!

But Pete, you lifted the Ex after you did the struts!
Buy a set of 4x4 struts and sell your 2-wheel drive versions bro. They're what, a bit over a year old?
