Black screen, recycle bin icon...that's about it.

I think I picked up some malware too, I've got some weird "system check" icon that I didn't install

That's beginning to sound like the same "system check" that I got last Friday. Did it look like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfZoS-b-eMA

This is recoverable.

Get the freeware Malwarebytes and run it in safe mode (if you can).

The blank screen is as a result of the malware setting everything on your desktop and start menu to "hidden".

There's a program called "Unhide" that will set those back to where you can see them, and you can then go from there.

A computer professional that knows his stuff will get this put back together for you in short order (well, maybe not SHORT).

Well, I'm no computer expert, but I know you DON'T have to "format the hard drive and start over" to get rid of it.

I also know that a do-it-yourselfer initially working on it can make it more difficult for the professional to get rid of completely.

Ask me how I know.

Hint: There's more to it than what's seen in the YouTube video...

Yeah, but I was having issues before that showed up...for quite a while, actually. Probably wouldn't hurt to wipe it and start over or just replace the hard drive.

Oh yeah, it's a hot topic right now in the mod forum. Apparently there's a hole in the vbseo plug-in and it's having effects far beyond just this site.

this is the most common problems people come to me for. they tried "fixing" the malwares/viruses with other programs. its a band-aid fix. it may work for a few months..few days..few weeks who knows how long that band-aid will hold up.

as i said. things like this ends up corrupting windows files and most of the time rewrites the registry strings. which will cause slow downs, crashing, BSOD etc.

in the end, its your computer and you do what you think its necessary.

as myself dont ever have these kind of problems. when one do arises. its off to new OS install. i dont EVER download any programs that suppose to "FIX" the current issue. it causes more headaches in the long run. the only thing i WILL download is directly from the microsoft site.

8gb USB stick + WIN7 Pro = 15min OS install on a computer (complete with mobo/gpu/nic drivers)

Over the weekend we downloaded XP SP3, then spent the time going to the update site and installing all those "critical" since SP3 was released.

That's very close to a new OS install, and is the "tune-up" I should have done months ago.

I am running XP Professional, and do not wish to go with a new OS.
