So I am trying to track down if I have an injector that is causing my knocking sound. I recently swapped in a 6.9 and this is the first time I have heard it run. So after getting it warmed up I started pulling out the injectors to see what I could find. 7 had fuel on them and 1 was dry. The other interesting one was the one closest to the driver, it has an interesting pattern of build up along the injector. It was also a real bear to get out. I was wondering if someone could enlighten me on what the injector should look like after the engine is warmed up. Should there be moisture on the ends or should it be drier? In the picture, the left one is the one that is dry, the right one has the build up on it.
when a 6.9/7.3 starts there is no oil in the crankcase of everything is smacking around in there til the oil gets there....it sounds powerstroke some ppl say...i just say it sounds really clacky...
When I bought my 1979 240D it knocked on startup. REALLY knocked. Thats why the PO sold it. (for cheap!) I didnt know what it was, but since the knock went away after the engine warmed up I bought the car. If worst came to worst I was prepared to take it apart and fix it.
But I drove it like that for two years. When I saw rebuilt injectors for like $25 each I treated the car to them.
The knock went away.
You can get eight rebuilt injectors for the IDI and if mine was running like that, thats what Id do.
