AFE stage 2 cold air intake
Hello everyone, I am considering the AFE stage 2 cold air intake for my early 99. I was wondering if anyone has tried this product out and if they are pleased with it. I am looking at this to gain a little horsepower, but mostly to get a little better fuel economy also wouldn't mind I little louder Turbo whistle. If you guys have any other suggestions or if this will do more damage than good, please let me know. I am new here and trying to get my feet wet in the diesel world so take it easy haha. Thank you ........Josh Byerly

Welcome to FTE Josh. AFE is a great product, just a tad pricey. It will help a little with the whistle, but don't look for any huge improvements in MPG's or HP. Another, less expensive alternative would be the 6637 intake set up.
It's basically just a huge open air element filter set up that you piece together yourself with a filter and a piece of 4" OD pipe. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...s-h-u-g-e.html Here's several pictures of it installed with a dust cover over it (you can get the dust cover for the AFE there too) Welcome to Pete's 6637 Intake Cover Web Page
The 6637 will give you more noise than the AFE stage 2 since the AFE has a box around it (but you can always build a box around the 6637 if you want to later. We have links on how to do that too). If you don't want to piece all the parts together yourself, you can order the 6637 filter kit here. Riffraff Diesel: RDP 6637 Filter Kit (they've also got good pricing on other intake kits)

The AFE intake is a very nice intake, one of the best looking and flowing. I like the S&B as well.
Do not expect to throw that intake on and "FEEL THE POWA". I doubt you would even be able to tell on a dyno.
It will not improve your MPG, little if any HP/tq but it will be much louder then stock.

Thank you for the quick reply and the welcoming. I did forget to mention that right now I do have the 6637 filter on it I purchased the truck from my uncle which is also an FTE member. When i bought the truck it was already on there. So do you think the 6637 would be more what I am looking for rather than switching to the AFE?

I have the AFE Stage 2 CAI. I later replaced the filter with their optional Dry "S" version. I am running Pete's filter cover and the oil from the filter wicked into it. The Dry "S" keeps the cover cleaner and requires no filter maintenance kit. I wash both with Simple Green, let air dry, and reinstall. I use the oiled filter until they are both dry if I need to use the truck. I usually give them overnight to dry completely.

I have an AFE stage II intake system
I am very happy with it. I have had it installed for just over 5 years/ AFE is actually great ith their cusotmer service, too, covered some parts under warranty.
The 6637 filter is just as good and cheaper
You pay more for the Stage II system, its more than just the filter and intake tube, it has a battery tray incorporated into the heat shield

Well from the sound of things I am just going to stick with the 6637. I can not justify spending that much cash for something that I will not get the gains I am looking for. I do know that a buddy of mine had a cold air intake on his dakota and it sounded great so that is what initially gave me the idea to consider one. I don't know if BC his being a Gasser made any difference or not but he believes it made a world of difference.
Since I have decided to stay with the 6637 intake, what are some other options I can go with to accomplish the same goal such as, horsepower, fuel economy, and more noise? I am still young I enjoy noise haha.
Here soon I am going to sit down and get my signature in order to simplify all my questions as to what up grades I already have. Thank you to everyone for all the help so far.
