Cam Timing

I have recently purchased a Comp Cam 249-CL34-227-4 from Jegs, and am currently installing a Cloyes C3079X timing set. This timing set has a 3-keyway crank allowing it to advance or retard crankshaft timing. My question is with this cam, where should I set my timing set? If I understand it correctly, the pre-1974 460-429 had advanced cam timing and 1974 and on had it retarded for early smog control. This truck does not need to pass any emissions tests, and I am looking to get the most low end torque I can out of it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, you are correct, but to properly set the cam timing, you need a degree wheel....set the engine to Top dead Center, install cam, etc, rotate engine checking when the cam opens/closes valves per mfg install instructions/specs. If you are unfamiliar with this process, then install the cam straight-up/neutral position...have someone who is familiar check the cam timing using a degree wheel.

That cam has 4 degrees of advance ground in so you can just install the crank gear on the center, straight-up key way.

Wrong link, but it is on the site under top ten FAQ'q. as suggested earlier use a degree wheel and see what the cam lobe centerline is and go off that.
