MSD coils

iv got a 2001 f150 5.4L 2V i was looking at replacing me coils and was looking at the accell and msd. obviously the msd is more than the accell but their specs are simular. by main question was that i was talkin to a mechanic about this and he said that if i was too put and upgraded coil in my truck with the amount of miles on it that it would burn our the rings, walls, or pistons, supposably. iv never hurd of this so input would be great.

That mechanic is stupid.

The aftermarket coils, MSD, Accel, Weapon X, all seem to have problems for one reason or another.

Just use a factory(not ebay version) set of coils and be done with it.

Ive heard and read alot of hesitation and failure problems from the aftermarkets coils. Stick with the OEM ones and call it a day.

I've got to chime in here about aftermarket COP's.

About a year or so ago in April installed the Granatelli COP's recommended for my '00 E250; 21-2001 their number. Cheap enough @ $200 for the set including boots----not a bad price considering at the time OEM COP's would have cost me about $70 each.

Within a month one of them failed but replaced under warranty without question. All was well, no issues but not much improvement either. Later in the year I began having CEL lighting up but only when a cold snap hit or my van sat overnight while cold or under 40 degrees. A few troubleshooting attempts led me to change the air intake duct work because it had become oil-soaked (bad, unchecked PCV before I owned it). It was thought loose fitting vacuum fittings into that duct were causing Lean Bank 1 & 2 codes which might have also triggered random misfire codes, never the same set of cylinders identified each event.

The same condition has returned this winter---a trusted and highly experienced mechanic suggests the Grantelli COP's might be the issue, suggesting I log the repeating misfire codes looking for consistent cylinder numbers. When the same cylinder is indicated changing back to the OEM COP may cure it.

I'm not unhappy completely with the Granatelli's but then again I'll never again use anything but OEM regardless where they're purchased. Good thing I kept my OEM COP's as they might be needed again now.

Long story short though without significant improvements all through the induction system anything other than OEM is a waste because it can't be utilized. Additionally the PCM may very well limit the actual spark voltage (speculation on my part) which renders anything better or hotter firing a bit useless or certainly under utilized.

HTH if only for reference.

Main question is why does the OP think he needs new COP's? I only ever had 1 fail in 250K miles, other two were torpedoed by the spark plugs that launched below them. #3 and #4 are the only real "common" failures because of the heater hose location directly above them.

MSDS and ACCELL if you google it and look at the pictures are known to die a very early death and neither company will warranty their junk. Hundreds of us here us the COP's from UneekSupply on Ebay. The fit and quality is the same as OE and should be considering the OE units were made in China to begin with. For about $70.00 for a set of 8 its and easy choice for most of us.
