I've got a 89 F150 4x4 with a 302 efi that is wore out. I would like to put a 351 with a 4 barrel carb in. the tranny is a t-18. could somebody please give me a step by step swap. Thanks
just to let you know i dont know if this applies in all states but when you go from EFI to carb it wont pass inspection. i think there are some sites that sell kits for conversion of engines. go look in the 302/351w forum.
If I were you I would try to find another EFI 351. Main reason is the post above. You can get hemmed up big time with the emmisions ****'s. Not too many states left that don't have testing. If they don't, give it a few years. a Carbed 351 will also hurt resale value not to mention gas mileage. Also, my EFI 5.0 Mustang runs alot smoother and requires alot less tinkering than my 78 F100 with a 4bbl 351. I know that alot of people put EFI 5.8's in EFI 5.0 mustangs. Much of the electronics hooks right up (not the computer). In fact, you can use alot of the crap off the 302 for your 351 such as the injectors and upper intake (not lower). Mechanically, the 351 is a little taller so your exhaust manifold/header (u can use the 302's) outlets will not line up with the old 302 exhaust. Motor mounts are the same, trans will bolt up (need a 351 fly wheel) and radiator is good to go. everything on the front of the engine is the same as well (alt, p/s pump, smog pump, A/C compressor, and (most likely) the water pump. Some of the mounting brackets will be different due to the 351 taller deck height. Distributor and oilpan are also different.
I have been having with the engine reved up when i push the clutch in. It usually takes it 2 or 3 seconds to come back down. And lately it will start reving up by itself and staying reved up to about 3000 rpms. i have to cut it off then it runs fine, but not for long. also i don't get but about 11 mpg. i would not mind it if it had the power to go with it. what could be causing it to stay reved up?
