Question Colored Diesel Question

I have a native reserve near me that sells colored diesel for a good discount but the Ministry of Revenue does regular spot checks in my area on diesel vehicles checking for colored diesel. Fine is $440 first time.

I was told that by mixing in some Tranny fluid it will fool the dye testing equipment that is used by the Ministry. Is this true?

If not is there a way to fool the test?

Down here the test is they dip your tank with this white rod and if its red your screwed no matter what. They don't test to see what's in the fuel

atf will turn the fuel red and get you a fine even if you tell then it is atf added.
as far as the tax guys are concerned, red fuel is red fuel and it is untaxed.

i agree, its not worth it. you can go a long ways on $440!

on a separate but semi-related topic... what about home made biodiesel? or WTO? its not taxed?! can you get in trouble if you are dipped and they realize its not taxed diesel?

I have an auxiliary tank in the back of my pickup and a guy who had one too was telling me that's its OK to fill that up with red stuff. I asked him, what if they ask you about it and he said that he says he has a farm. I told him he was a fool. For one thing when your filling up there are camera's watching him and 'they' know everything about us anyway. Like said, its not worth it.

as long as your using your aux tank for transporting fuel only your fine. like if you have a ranch and have a peace of equiptment out in the field that needs filled up and is to far away to bring back to the ranch to fill up your gunna need to bring the fuel to it somehow. i personaly wouldnt put it in my pickup cuz its just not worth the ticket.

You are supposed to pay the taxes on it yourself. There is a form (I forget the number, but it's like an income tax form) you fill out with the amount of fuel made, and then send in the taxes to the feds (and State depending on where you live).

Also, you are allowed (at least down here) to have red fuel in any tank in your truck which IS NOT connected to the vehicle fuel system. The cops usually know to check if you're trying to be clever and hook up your in-bed tanks to the vehicle.

Mine is connected to my front tank but even if it wasn't I wouldn't put red in it.They could find out real quick if you have a farm or ranch.

Yep, if you make your own bio-diesel or run on vegi oil you are SUPPOSED to pay the road taxes on it...

Of course, there isn't really a way for them to track whether you do that or not, unless you start selling it to other people and make it into a business. If it's just for your own use they won't really know.

Are you sure about that? We pay our gov billions of $ to spy on ourselves, makes a lot of sense. I'll probably go to jail now for saying that!

after you make over a certain number of gallons are you supposed to pay taxes on it.

I believe its 300 or 500 gallons in michigan, I do not recall.

Though, if your not selling it, you wont usually get in trouble even if your making 3,000 gallons.
As long as it doesn't look like you have a huge processing facility in your back yard.

The funny thing about red fuel is this.

It's called "off road fuel"

So, does that mean when I turn into my driveway, or drive around my yard or farm I can run red fuel?
But when I get on the highway I can switch to blue fuel?

I'm sure they will not ever let you do that, but if you think of it, i'm correct in that assumption.

Now in some states, farm use vehicles can run red fuel with no penalty.

Hell, in WV, you just spray paint farm use on the doors and the bed of the truck and you don't even have to plate/register the vehicle.

Fuel tax laws and road tax laws are hokey as it is. There are to many fine lines and grey area's.

I always worried about fuel additives screwing with dye colors.
I'll add 2cycle in, what will that do for testing?
Stuff like that.

Hell, I strained a gallon of oil and put it in last time, That musta really made it look funny.

The best way to "fool the test" is to just use road Diesel. Never give "The Man" an excuse to enter your life.
