1976 Ford f250 390

New to FTE. I was given this truck that's been in my family since new. It's going to be a first time learn as we go project for my son and I. Not a lot of knowledge or experience with mechanic's, just the basics. It was hard to start, lots of gas and took awhile to get going. Never really idled without keeping a little gas. Noticed a knocking sound and the crankshaft pulley was wobbly. Took off harmonic balancer and it wasn't pressed on all the way, only took a few turns of the puller to get it off. Put a new one on and made sure it was all the way on. Adjusted the timing and the valves, which were loose. Torqued them to 45 ft/lbs, the engine has the rocker rail setup, so its only four bolts. It started up easier after all this. Now the new problem. As long as it idles it seems fine, but when you give it gas it develops metal on metal grind and the engine dies. Almost like it seizes up. It'll start up fine after it dies then does the same thing if you give it gas. I have the valve covers off when its running and after this happens there's smoke that comes out of the passenger side valves. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sounds like the timing is too far advanced and you are hearing detonation - can sound like rocks in a coffee can...

My next step would be to check the ignition timing.

this is going to sound dumb, but if the ECM fails the engine will run rough as hell (also costs 30$) it sounds alot more serious then just that tho....

My father in law was just telling me this last night! He said his 74 F100 460 would start backfiring and that was his signal to replace the "brain box" for the ignition...

Sorry its taken so long for a reply, but we have figured out what was causing our noise. What I failed to mention was I took out the distributor to adjust timing because I was told it was moved 180 degrees for whatever reason so I tried to move it back. It turns out it wasn't. In doing so the oil pump drive shaft became disconnected from the distributor and pump thus resulting in no oil being circulated. We have taken out the oil pan and retrieved the shaft. It was bent and it didn't have the keeper washer on it. Now in the process of putting everything back together and keeping our fingers crossed.
