do they just get switched out or is the adjusting involved

It's a whole combination of adjustments. swapping springs, adjusting spring tension and also slots in the upper advance shaft ( different sized slots for different mechanical advance.

The first thing I would do if I were you is get my hands on a dial back timing light and see how much mechanical advance you are actually getting first and then go from there.
