Interesting question that will no doubt spark some great interaction. I'll begin.
Mine has been the most incredible truck / engine / drive train combo that I've owned in my life.
I'm getting the advertised MPG's, it's powerful as hell, quiet, smooth, fuel efficient and requires so little maintenance that it's a pure joy to own. At this point in ownership I could not in good conscience recommend another engine besides the ecoboost 3.5L.
It's seems that the 2.0L ecoboost isn't faring nearly as well in the Explorer. The 2.0L is too small and lacks the power needed to pull the heavy Explorer and achieve the advertised MPG's. In fact, if you want to tow with a 2012 Explorer, you MUST get the 3.5L engine as the 2.0L EB does not come with the tow package.
Now having said all that, some here are not as happy as I am. Some are having trouble achieving the advertised MPG's, one fella is leaking oil, another has been hearing foreign turbo noises but no one has complained about power and the overall WOW factor.
The issues here seem to be isolated and not representative of the overall ecoboost experience. Not trying to minimize anyone's concerns as I would be pissed as well if I had serious issues.
whats the overwhelming majority opinion on the Ecoboost?
The V8 guys hate it.
I love mine. No problems in the 9 months I've had it. It has more power and gets better MPGs than any of my previous F150s. I was getting close to EPA fuel ratings before I put large mud terrains on it. I still get pretty good mileage considering. To get good mileage you have to drive pretty conservative. If you drive it like you stole it you won't get very good mileage. But the same can be said for any other 1/2 ton truck.
nah... I went with the 5.0 because at the time there were amost no EB trucks on the dealer lots yet so, to get the truck I wanted with the options I was looking for meant I had no choice on the engine and, since the 5.0 was more than capable of doing what I wanted it to there was no point in waiting for an EB truck. Now, had there been an identically equipped EB truck sitting in the lot right next to the 5.0 I was negotiating over well then... perhaps things MIGHT have gone differently (or perhaps not, no way to ever really know for sure on that). I like the 3.5 EB, and I like the 5.0. Two good engines, both very capable, both remarkably fuel efficient for use in a full sized pickup (when driven reasonably). Either one is a good choice.
I think the Ecoboost is fine...My only real complaint is that it doesn't sound cool...As minor as that might seem it was one of a few deciding factors for me. I agree with those that say both 5.0L and Ecoboost are fantastic...I don't have nearly as much experience with the Eco as I do with the 5.0L, seeing as I own a 5.0L.
If Ford could figure out how to make the current Ecoboost sound like my 5.0L or just give us a small displacement Ecoboost V8 then I might not be so stand offish about it.
As far as durability and all that go's, So far the Ecoboost seems to be doing just fine. I've read the complaints about leaking oil and funky turbo noise's on this fourm and others, but it doesn't really seem like anything to bad, Just a few bugs with a new product as is almost always the case.
As far as people being disapointed in the Ecoboosts fuel econmy go's, I think alot of that has to with the fact that the Ecoboost was hyped by Ford as very fuel efficent engine...And it actually is for the amount of power it makes...But as with all engines, in order to make that 420lb/ft of torque it has to use 420lb/ft of torque's worth of fuel...That's just a cold hard fact that apply's to Ecoboost's and none Ecoboost's.
I like the idea of it...What really excites me though is the idea of a 5.0L (or similer) Ecoboosted engine.
