Hi guys.. I had my rig painted after i did all the body work. Got it ironed out really nice. I took it too a "volume paint shop" and they laid a VERY nice coat of blue pearl. I cant complain about the price, - a tick over 900$ for a complete color change of a urethane type paint. It had a warranty for 2 years, and by about the 3rd year it was fading, and now into the 4th year, pretty faded on top. After wet sanding, the gloss looked near new, till it rained. Spots everywhere. The clear coat option was 3 year warranty, but much more cost. I would like to get it paint it again, but am i asking too much for a paint color to last more that 3 to 4 years?. I am from california, so i know the better paints you just cant get out here. EPA takes the fun out of everything.... Thanks for any input..
Some top coats will break down faster due to poor application methods. For example some painters who do not have lots of experience applying high metallic colors might over mist the last coat. Another method is to over reduce the last coat to get the paint to flow and level out better. All these can and I say can, make for a poor finish down the road ie few years or even a few weeks. Human error aside, clear was designed for the problem you mention. Dull flat appearances tend to upset those that just spent $50,000 on a new rig. UV rays are hard on paint. Clear solved that problem. Once the finish breaks down there is nothing you can do. I argue that applying wax is the worst thing you could do. If the surface breakes down then it becomes porous. The wax is sucked into the paint. You probably know this becuase you have waxed it more than once with minimal results. All the wax does is provide a problem for the person who will be refinishing the parts. Wax and paint just don't mix.
Well, the clear coat option is very pretty. But i have seen cars with the clear flaking off, and it looks down right butt ugly. I would prefer the faded paint of the two i guess. Thanks for the tip... maybe next time I might go for the clear coat
