Ok, you guys convinced me. I will start gathering parts to do the Ford PS swap and get a steering box ordered from Redhead. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Are you sure we're talking about the same thing? I had to cut my manual column down 2" when converting to power steering, and have always heard that the Ford PS column was the shortest.
The distance between the firewall and the steering box was shorter for the Bendix box by about 6-8"? On a 67-72 truck? (IIRC that would put the rag joint pretty much up against the firewall).

I put the Bendix box in my '66 and without modifying the column, the steering wheel set just over an inch from the column (unsightly gap). To fix it, I used the steering shaft from a 68 F100 with factory Bendix power steering. I simply inserted the 68 shaft into my 66 column. The Ford box uses an even shorter shaft. I actually wished I had gone to the Ford box after hearing all the horror stories on the Bendix box. I have a couple columns, and some 70's steering shafts. I may mock one up when I get time and see if you can put a 70's shaft into an early column.

I'm not sure if Redhead sells boxes (they are a remanufacturer), they may have some rebuilds ready to go but will probably charge you a core. I'm getting ready to send them the steering gear out of my 73 Bronco.

They have some boxes in stock, the Ford gear being one of them. They will charge me a core, so I'll just get a box from the junkyard to send them. He quoted me $219 plus core, plus shipping. That seems really reasonable to me. He charge $450 + to rebuild a Bendix. That makes this choice a no-brainer IMO
