You'll need to get a Lisle 65600 spark plug removal tool to get the rest out. Rock Auto and some other tool sites sell them for around $65. There are threads on this site explaining how to do it. Also the latest TSB is posted on this site on spark plug removal procedure under Recalls/TSB heading.

Ditto on the Lisle tool. You will be good in short order with it in hand.. The tool works great! Good Luck!

If you need it quicker, you can find them at some NAPA and O'Reilly stores. May cost more though. (~$100)

Ford should have put one in the glove box of all 3 valve modular engines, IMO. Just like the locking lug nut socket.

Is there a permanent fix to keep this from happening, or do you guys just buy the tool and deal with it when you change your plugs?

As mentioned above, a search in the TSB section would help...

Yep, so would answering the question by providing the information. Plus, your resorting to the "use the search button" response defeats the purpose of my post.

The search button is something all veteran user know how to use, as you well know, but being a new mod for the forum, I'm looking for ways (threads) to engage in conversation with the regular users of this forum in an effort to get to know them, to let them get to know me, while at the same time learning a little bit about the '04+ trucks.

I already posted a "New Co-Mod" thread introducing myself but I plan on posting in a few threads over the course of time, asking the same kind of questions like in this thread, so please refrain from falling back on the "use the search button" response.

Much appreciated.

Stewart_H, I believe you got that response because: a) there is a TSB for this specific issue which describes specifics as well or better than you might generally get (and you need to at least reference); and b) because this particular topic has been beat to absolute death due to its widespread affect on ALL owners of the earlier models. That said, I understand how that response has in cases been overused.

So, saw your other post, and welcome to this forum. Am sure we will be crossing paths frequently.

If you notice I also linked to the specific TSB/topic as well, as I usually do when I give that response. I have even posted a pdf of this for easier access before. I know the shortcomings of this search system, as I am a vbulliten admin myself on other sites as well as my own sites using various CMS.

Welcome and enjoy the fun...

I absolutely know exactly why I got that response.

You should see some of the "same/repeated" questions in the Ex forum. Sometimes the questions aren't even asked by newbs.

That said, I understand how that response has in cases been overused.
Overused? Nah, not really. But I will say, I have found it useful (and a better answer), to "help" people by alerting them to the search function (better to teach a man to fish, than give him a fish when he's hungry, eh? ), and to also follow-up that response by providing them with the information they've asked about, or to link them to a thread that had really fleshed out the problem.

But that's just me.

Yeah, like my follow-up post stated, while I was asking about the solution (I already knew the 3 valve heads suffered from this problem), I was more interested in just kind of jumping in and engaging the regular users. What better way than to grab a thread with a well documented and known problem and saying "hey!"

I guess I could have made my intentions a little better known tho.

Welcome to FTE, Stewart. The only permanent fix I know of, if you want to call it that, is to remove and replace the spark plugs often. Every 30K miles would seem reasonable. Or purchase an 08 or newer 3-valve engine as they have the redesigned heads. Using Champion 7989 plugs will help as well. But some on this site have had some problems with the Champions and driveability issues. That's about as direct answer to your question as asked as I can give besides the TSB.

It's makes you scratch yer head, ya know? I mean, it seems like spark plugs in the cylinder heads have been a thorn in Ford's side for awhile! At least since the '99 MY modular engine came out with an inadequate number of plug threads per hole, allowing the plugs to be launched if the spark plugs weren't installed within the rigid guidelines that left very little margin for error.

What's worse, a lunched plug (or the risk) or a stuck plug. Choose your poison!

I should have rememebered that one, I used to pull the plugs on my 06 Mustang GT (3V 4.6) every 25k and re-treat them. Hell, it was one of the first things I did the weekend after I got it home.
