paint job

Alright, i bought my first truck a few months ago. i convinced my teacher to let me use it as part of my SAE project for FFA. I told her im restoring it. Im ready to get to work bc i have to be able to show by this summer that my truck has been worked on and will pull a horse trailer. About how much would a gloss black paint job cost? What does a paint job normally cost?

ythere are two ways to go about this. first way is with automotive paint. a base coat clear coat paint job is going to cost you about

$800 to $1000 for paint alone.
or you can go the rustoleum route, and it will be around $100 for paint

gloss block will show every dent, ding, and wave in your body work. White hides them.

Like Tom and BASHBY said.

Good paint is not cheap, but if the body work is not going to be perfect, dont waste your money.

And body work has to be PERFECT for black. I would suggest picking a different color, preferably the stock color(or very close). Other wise you will have to paint under the hood, door jams, between bed /cab and inside the bed

I will point out that gloss black isn't as good for pulling a horse trailer, have to have stripes to make it look faster.

But seriously, these guys are all right. If you want to make it look uniform and show work, just sand and put a good primer on IMHO

I just did a 62variable vette in dupont black single stage. Entire job was 5500$

Black will always cost more because its a pita to do. Match whatever color it is now so you don't have to re-do the jambs. Nothing uglier than a repainted car with different color door jambs.

My truck's original color is Black. I am doing the body work right now. I know it will take a long time and much extra work. And, I don't know if I want to paint it myself or have a professional paint it when the time comes. I may even do as much of the prep as I can and let them put the last coat of primer on before they paint it.

Ok in that case do a single stage gloss black. Should also be cheaper on your wallet. If possible request omni au paint should also be cheaper as its just ppg's fleet line

I agree on the single stage just for duribility. You can lay on a few extra layers for a really thick coat that can be buffed when something happens. Just keep these in mind....
1. It will ALWAYS cost twice what you estimate your first time.
2. Good materials cost more, but make your job shorter, dont use the abundance of time to cheap out on the important stuff. For instance, the blue I shot my 88 with costs $1000 a gallon through a paint store and the clear is around the same amount.
3. Dont be afraid of bondos and fillers, they have come a long way and as long as you use them right, they will make a great finish for fast. Evercoat is a great brand that I love using.
4. If you can avoid stripping the paint to the metal, do so. You'll have abetter base to sand on top of and a better product will come of it. Save the soda and media blasting for full on restorations
5. Take your time and dont start a portion unless you're ready to finish that ENTIRE part, more times ive spent 3x as much time fixing something cause I left it unfinished and didnt remember what I did after i returned after few days.
6. Block sand everything possible, dont use your fingers, this is especially important with black.
7. Have fun, nothing is better then saying you paint your own ride.

a cheaper/ easier way is dupi color sells an automotive paint called bodyshop or paintshop i belive and its all pre mixed all you do is put it in a gun and spray it. Its like 25 a can and you would need primer paint and clear which they all sell. If your looking for a DIY paint that is what i would do

A pre mixed base and clear? How does it cure? Doesnt seem like a very long lasting or durable finish. However duplicolors new waterbourne system is pretty great for a reasonable price

I saw it on tv and what not. They were doing a pickup in it and it was a no hassle to paint it. They said long lasting its the same as normal paint they just took all the guess work out of it.

no, he is talking about premix with thinners.
you still have to do the base coat and then the clear coat.

+1 What he said.

I have used that paint on a few cars I've owned and they turned out great. But you have to do all the prepwork and sand down to a very fine grit.

There is literally 1 dent on my truck, on the gate. I have no scratches either, its just rusty in the bed and wheelwells, but not on the frame. Im replacin the bed this week anyway though.
