I just inherited my Dad's '76 E250 Factory Trailer Special, which I want to use as my tow rig. As I drove it home yesterday, I noticed that it lacked pep and pinged under acceleration and when climbing the OR-CA I-5 passes. This morning I took a peek under the hood and see that it has a Streetmaster intake and small AFB. Could this combo be choking off the engine under load?
It did get good gas mileage (10.6 mpg over 800+ miles), but I want to tow a race car trailer that weighs up to 8000 lbs, and fuel economy is a secondary consideration. My first '76 E250 pulls this load fine (if slowly up the passes), but is getting real long in the tooth.
Anyway, I plan to keep this van for the long-term, so am open to both long-term and short-term suggestions. In the shop I have a Performer 460/Edel 750 combo. What do you guys think of this combo for towing?
