Too much advance

I'm running an MSD 6AL and MSD 8350 dizzy. I have the 18 degree stop bushing installed and seem to have 9 degrees at the rotor which should yield 18 at the crank.
The porblem is I'm indicating 30 advance degrees at the crank. This is with the vacuum advance disconnected, 8 degrees initial and 38 at 4,000rpm for a 30 degree advance.
how could this be? The only other thing I can think of is the timjing light being off due to the multispark. I'm using a 15 year old Craftsman light. I have an Equis timing light thats new but wont work on this ignition.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I've never gotten as deeply into the distributors as you have, but I don't suppose you can temporarily bypass the 6AL to check the timing?

When I installed a 6AL onto my old Mustang, it started up much easier, but the tachometer readings ended up being very low. I'm told there may be an adapter I can install to correct this, but it's obvious that the 6AL changes some signals.

I found the problems. The 6AL is acting wierd. No problem running just off the HEI dizzy.

The 6AL should have a terminal for driving tacks. Use it instead of the coil.

Glad you found the problem, but bummer that it's a defect in the 6AL.

In my old Mustang, the tach is the stock unit, hooked into the instrument cluster somehow. I'll have to find its wiring diagram to see how it's connected, and see if I can run the signal from the 6AL to it.

thanks GFW.

I still need to check the wiring diagram for the Mustang to see how its tachometer is wired, and run the wire to that pin on the 6AL box, and hope that they're compatible.

Unless your Mustang is distributorless it should pick up the tach signal at the coil negative side.
