Question 84 BII smog pump

A friend of mine has a 84 B II with a 2.8 V6 After fixing some of the screw ups that another person did on it, we took off the smog pump due to it freezing up. we adjusted the valves and got it running, but it has a rough idle, and surges at highway speeds. Could it be that this engine needs the pump? None of the lines are blocked off to the vacum valves from the pump, and will be doing that later and see what happens... anyone else had experience with this?

Just everyone that has a 2.8. The computer controlled carb is very picky on it's adjustment. Often, parts of the system fail, and it causes a chain reation of problems in the system. Start by running codes to see what systems are having problems. Codes don't nessarily mean that the sensor in the troubled system are bad, just that something is not right. Most of the time, the carb needs a rebuild as a starting point. The computer used in these does not have a large margin of compensation for malfunctioning components. Removing the air pump only has an effect on emissions, and should only throw codes relating to it's operation.
