Torque converter question.

This may be all in my head, but my truck seems to be running at a slightly higher rpm than it used to going down the highway. Is there a way to check to see if my T/C is operating correctly? In my firebird I used to be able to tap the brake while maintaining speed and the rpms would kick up for a couple of seconds and then back down when the T/C unlocked then locked back. I tried that last night with the truck and didn't notice a change. Is there any other way to test it? Thanks.

Do you hear the torque converter locking up in 3rd gear as you're accelerating? Not hard on throttle, just normal acceleration from a standstill. Once you hit 3rd gear, you'll hear the RPMs drop just slightly, which is the torque converter locking up.

The other thing you can do is get to highway speed, but get the RPMs in 6th gear down to about 1000 (whatever speed that is, 45MPH I think), find a long uphill, put it in manual mode and keep it in 6th gear. Then just floor it up the hill. You should see your boost gauge go to 21PSI, the truck will accelerate and the RPMs should climb slowly as you build up speed, just like in a car with a manual gearbox. There shouldn't be a big jump in RPMs as you apply throttle as that would indicate that the torque converter isn't locked.

Nothing beats a diesel, at low RPMs, locked up, just climbing up a hill.

Looks like it's working like it should. Thanks for the tip.
