Coolant Filter Prep
Coolant Filter Prep
Gentleman,
My coolant filter is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow so I am preparing to install it. I plan to drain the old coolant, go back with some water, drain it, and replenish it with Ford gold and distilled water.
My question: Should I put the filter on BEFORE I run the water through for a few minutes...or should I wait until I fill it back up with the coolant, then put the filter on?
Cheers

I would do a flush if its never been done and use new coolant and distilled water. JMHO.
1. Drain coolant
2. Add 2 cans of VC-9 and top off with distilled water.
3. Drive 20 to 30 miles, preferably at highway speeds.
4. Drain radiator at petcock first, then pull lower hose. Then remove block plug on driver side. Not necesary to do passenger side.
5. Remove t-stat. To do this, remove air cleaner. Then 2 nuts on t-stat housing. Pry press. sensor bracket off of studs. Tight fit but it will move. Remove 2 more nuts and pull t-stat and housing from studs.
6. Remove t-stat and put housing back on. Re-assemble everything and fill with distilled water.
7. Run at 1200 rpm's for 3 to 5 minutes and drain as described in step 4.
8. Repeat 4 to 5 times or untill water coming at is as clear as water going in.
9. Install t-stat using new O ring. I used vaseline to hold the O ring in place.
10. After everything is re-assembled fill with a 50/50 mix of Ford premium gold or Zerex GO-5.
11. Start engine and check for leaks. This is a lot easier and quicker than it sounds. If you don't remove t-stat then you have to run truck between each flush till t-stat fully opens and then let cool down to work on it.
Highly recommend installing coolant filter kit while cooling syatem is empty. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

Also,
Many people (mostly gasser drivers) scoff at the idea of a coolant filter. Calling it "un-necessary" and could be easily avoided by frequent coolant changes. What do you guys say to that? I always said that would be VERY frequent, but just wondering you guys input. Dont worry, still installing my filter though, just wondering, lol

Well you can tell all those Gasser Drivers that they dont have to worrey about it cause they aint stepped up to the Big Leagues yet LOL
Naw we have to go thru this because of the Passages in the oil cooler will plug with casting sand if they didnt get cleaned out very good during the manufacture process
But from your last thread on this it does sound like you got a clean one if I remember right
You still had a single digit spread right??
I wouldnt worrey about that VC-9 and all those cleaners it didnt sound like you needed it before when we talked

" gasser drivers" don't have a oil cooler that collects casting sand and sediment like a pack rat on cocaine. Nuff said!

Right Blade, we had come to that conclusion that I did not need to mess with the extreme cleaning, I was doing your suggestion with running the water through. I just had that question about which point in the process to put the filter on. After i run the water through or before...
I would put the Filter on after you flush the old coolant & Contaminates out put it on the last water Flush right before you add the new coolant
I would imagine this could be eliminated by that very nifty BPD Oil Cooler kit...maybe I will get that when I come upon a spare $2,000
Sounds good, I'm ready!
Explaining to "gassers" would be one thing, I had to explain it to a Ford dealer service department.
The service writer didn't believe me. I had to share with Her and this other guy the TSB that had just come out about the "ECT vs EOT" temp spread. While I was telling them about it, she was typing away on the computer to find it. Apparently she did, she went "hmph" and walked away.

I am currently working on the coolant install and I drained out the coolant via drain plug...but when I went to fill the bottle up with water it only took three gallons before it was filled to the MAX...anyone know why?
