Having Trouble with Points

thanks for all the feedback!! would the fact that the key was keft on for a couple hours ruin anything besides the points? also we did check the coil and it works fine and it has relatively new plugs and wires

Too hot of a coil can burn up points quick. So stay with a stock coil. The guys are right pertronics work great. But from your issue of misalighnment I think the dist is lose in its seat (poor gasket or holddown an bolt) or dist shaft is wandering (poor bushings or worn shaft). Hand check for wiggles, then check your timing and watch if the mark wanders a few degrees or stays solid on the mark. Last of all watch out for cheaply made points sets that can wander on thier own. I've run points for decades still do but you can't beat modern tech.
