fuel pump acting funny

on my 01 F250 with the 7.3, the fuel pump that is attached to the frame under the drivers side has started acting funny. It started a few days ago. When you turn the key on and you can hear it whinning/buzzing, its starting to cut in and out like it has a short in it or something. But it still starts just fine, and runs fine.
Does this mean that the pump is going out? If so, where can i get a replacement? Are they hard to swap out? What are the steps to doing so?

Thanks for any help you can give. Im afraid its gonna go out and leave me stranded, so i want to get it fixed asap. Thanks

Well Mine is doing the same thing on my 00, and I Just got a FASS pump and filter system today.
If you get the right one you can bypass that old pump, the kit comes with everything you need. Money well spent on this system! If you want you can remove the stock filter, and the fuel bowl if you want to. I will prob. just remove the filter for now.

I've never heard of an intermittent fuel pump...but there is first time for everything. When they fail it's more common for the fuel pump to just die. Works one minute and dead the next.

The sound you are hearing could be from a sticking FPR...
A fuel pressure gauge might help diagnose for certain. If you have a spare o-ring and parker sleeve then you could remove the poppet and turn on the key to see if the pump sounds normal. However, if you are going to go through that much effort you might as well replace the regulator parts while you are in there.

Here is a link to the FPR kit in case yours needs replacement.

It could be the pump...I am just giving you some other options to consider before you replace a part that may not be bad. Since the truck is running fine, I think the FPR is a more likely thing to check. My wife's truck made a noise like that and it turned out the FPR was dirty.

I think we might have a winner. My pump did that a while back. I stuck a gauge on it to see what was going on. The pressure would max the gauge out over 100 psi and the pump whoud shut off for a split second. Pressure would start to drop and the pump would come back on. It just cycled on and off non-stop like that.

My problem was a bad FPR. The fitting that slides into the fuel bowl was loose and causing the problem. (the piece in the top left corner in the first link above). I ordered the FPR kit from Bob in the link above and fixed my problem.

Sorry, forgot about that part.

Let's start with this and someone will likely come along with better pics

The part circled is the fuel filter bowl. On the right hand side of the bowl near the top, you'll see a rigid line coming out of the fuel bowl. You can see it in the above picture. The nut where it screws on is almost hidden behind the post that the plastic appearance cover bolts on to. The part on the side of the fuel bowl that this line screws into is the FPR. It's held on to the fuel bowl with 2 screws.

No problem..we will help you out best we can..try this link
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/a...8&d=1320696464

If the link worked, then you can see where the Fuel Pressure Regulator is located. I think there is installation instructions for the FPR on the Replacement O-rings for Ford Diesel Engines site (links that were posted earlier...)

Hope this helps

And i see that fitting to the right of the bowl like you are talking about.....is that what im needing to concentrate on you think?
I hate to sound like such an idiot.

I change my fuel filter every 15,000 miles. If you haven't changed yours, I'd say it's time to do it. Start with a new filter and then look at the FPR if you're still having issues.

Ok. I will try the fiter tomorrow. Are any filters better than others? Is there a trick or secret to changing it? Don't want to do something wrong or mess it up.

Motorcraft filter is best. Just look at the one you take out and make sure the o-ring is on the new one before install. If you can waite order from Clay@riffraff diesel he's got you covered.
