Hey im new to this forum and just bought my first diesel 4 days ago. 1997 7.3 with 194k miles. The engine would not heat up at all so i figured it was a stuck open thermostat, since i replaced the thermostat with a new 192 degree one the engine will super slowly heat up to the "N" or "O" in "NORMAL" written on the stock engine temperature gauge cluster. Is this normal for it to take such a long time to heat up?
Yup, that's pretty typical and mine never gets past about the O on the temp gauge. It just takes a long time to heat up 950 Lbs of cast iron. Welcome to the site!
Yes, it's normal to heat up slowly. The 192 stat will start opening at about 170* and with the efficiency on our cooling systems it will be hard to surpass that number, unless you work the engine harder. In the summer months it will heat up faster.
I had the same issue and switched to the DieselSite 203 stat ...
This is kind of OT but it deals with heat up. I started my truck this morning to let my dad out of the garage. and when i started up my tac was around 600 to 700 and bounced between 900 to 500 usally it sits at 600 at idle cold or hot. do our motors notice the temp and idle higher? like the newer motors ?

I know mine does. It didn't used to do this but I didn't used to have an IAT sensor plugged in either. It must sense lower temperature and idle a bit higher when it is really cold.

Just weird past 2 days have been snowing and like 14 degrees. then today it was around 30 and did it. but aslong as it doesnt hurt anything. If she wants to heat up quicker doesnt matter to me.
WELCOME TO FTE brenden97! Stick around and get to know your truck. This is the best place on the "www"! Surely you have some more questions. They know all about your truck and WILL help you through anything!
I know my buddys 6 liter will high idle when cold. but i since if had the truck no matter the temp its always around 600 rpm. but today it like was jumping all around. from 800rpm to 500 rpm just idleing in the drive way for the 5 mins i sat in it. it wasnt that cold today which is the thing that got me. but hopefuly tommarow morning it will idle right.

Thanks!!!
Welcome to FTE. Mine used to have terrible heat until I got the 203 t stat. I can reach the "M" even during the winter and have great heat. Get it from dieselsite.com.
Another thing I do during the winter to warm up quicker (if you have an auto) is drive with the OD off until I get to the freeway.
Stick around, lots of great info/knowledge on this site.

And if you decide to go with the hotter t stat. Get the billet housing. I wish I would have. Your gonna spend 30 extra on it and the longer hose since you have to make a mess might as well change it while you only have one mess. The factory neck will get start to look about like the one you have now if your in a wetter area.

CPS going? Mine had a really screwy idle before mine went out all the way. Just a thought
