Antifreeze Leak

Looking for some insight.

2001 F250, com. mods. Drove to work this morning no issues other than it was about 0 degrees out. Parked the truck went inside. I got a phone call from a co worker about 4 hours after the truck was parked saying that the truck was leaking some sort of fluid. After a small investigation I have found that it is antifreeze. Dagus bottle is completely empty. From what I can see it appears to be leaking around the harmonic balancer.

Any ideas?

Thanks a bunch,

Adam

It could be your waterpump is leaking form the weep hole in the neck (behind the pulley). That will drip right down on the balancer. It's hard to see but it sounds like it. If that's the case, it's time for a new one.

Here's a link to a replacement: Riffraff Diesel: OEM Powerstroke Water Pump

Chris thank you for the response. I was wondering the same thing where there are no obvious leaks from any of the hoses. Like I said it seems as if it were leaking from the top of the balancer down, like its coming from the weep hole of the water pump and leaking on top of the balancer. Id assume if it is leaking it is junk correct?

funny, have same exact problem. just changed starter and alternator a couple weeks ago and now this. Not too bad, considering old green is @ 215k.

Yes, it'll leave you stranded. You'll need to confirm the leak. If a new pump is in order, you may as well look into a coolant flush and an ELC coolant like Rotella , Chevron Delo, or many others. It's also a good time to change hoses, with an around the belt top hose.

Attached is a link with some info. I'm sure others will be along, and good luck.

Yes. A few years ago, it left a spot on the drive way. I was in a hurry so put a bottle of bars-leak in. It sopped leaking for ~5 years, but is back with a vengeance.

Yup, more times than not, that's the pattern. If it leaked enough to drain the Degas bottle empty, I'd say its a good size leak.

It was indeed the water pump. Thank y'all for the fast, helpful responses!

Just got mine today. Now I am waiting for the yellow tape to arrive at my door tomorrow. I just flushed my system a few months ago. Is it possible to reuse some of that antifreeze?

Yes. Use something to filter it. I stick a coffee filter in a funnel.

I replaced my T stat and did a coolant flush with ELC about two months ago. Drained the coolant into a container and reused it. I used paint filters and they seemed to filter out a lot of stuff.
