I believe that the mechanics are competent. I also don't think they have taken the time to properly listen to the situation (or knock) and that they get to the 'metal in oil' part and stop listening to me. Do you have any suggestions as to what I should check/look for? I have not put it back together and driven it yet.
Sorry, I thought it was just you and the hubby making the diagnosis. I missed the part when you took it to the shop.
It wouldn't take and experienced tech but a few seconds to hear a bottom end knocking. And if they went through the trouble of sectioning the filter then they were having a good look.
what im going off of is her very first post in this thread... she said it had a knock with a loss of oil pressure.. and metal flakes in the oil filter.. i dont even have to see or hear the engine to know what it is.. rebuilt many engines with this problem. rebuilding one right now...
now if it was just a knock and had good oil pressure and ne metal flakes... id say look at a cracked flywheel.. if it had a loss of oil pressure without the knock or flakes.. id say oilpump.. but seeing it has a loss of oil pressure , knock , and metal flakes.. this indicates one thing... the main bearings are shot.. the crankshaft is where your oil pressure runs through.when they fail you lose the oil pressure..
now you can do a shortblock and save some money.. but that depends on the heads.. as the cam journals do not have bearings , they are milled into the head.. about half of the motors ive seen that looses oil pressure has messed up the cam journals... which would require a long block then.
but if the cam journals are ok.. then go with a shortblock for sure... i would go ahead and replace the timing chains while your in there though just for piece of mind

if you already have it apart, then just go ahead and get the used motor and throw it in.. use whatever parts are missing off the used motor from your motor...this is a quick fix and will get you back on the road.. and if the used engine you found has a 1 yr warranty.. then you know you will be ok for a year.
