Ok guys, here are my questions, just to sum it all up.
1. Re manufactured or used?
2. Can I put oil/filter back and run it a little more or will that make it a more costly repair in the end?
3. Would you recommend getting the engine local or online from out of state?
If your going to replace the engine then it doesnt really matter if you drive this one.. it will sooner than later lock up the engine though.. the knock will turn into a metal squeeling then lock up and destroy the crank and a few other parts.. but if the engine is being replaced then that wont be a problem.
If you are going to run it more.. id say put synthetic with zmax in it to get the most out of it before it dies..
As far as used or reman..my opinion if your going to go through all this get a reman.. used is a gamble.. it may work for years or it may crap out like yours in a few months.. you dont know how the previous owner took care of it
And local or out of state doesnt really matter.. if you can find local then great it will cut your shipping cost way down.. but there are plenty of good engine builders out of state
Lelink where are you located? I made a couple phone calls and found a used engine with less than 100k on it for $2500 with a one year unlimited mileage warranty.
I'm in Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania. It's about 10 minutes from Harrisburg. Thank you so much! I'm pleasantly surprised by the willingness to help that I have found on this forum. You guys rock!
Mechanicsburg huh? I'm about an hour away. The engine I was talking about for $2500(+$400 core) is in Binghamton, NY. It may not be the correct motor. I told them you had a 2002(guessed) and the motor was without an egr valve. They need the year and the 8th digit of the vin to make sure it is right.
Used vs. Reman is all personal preference. Jasper looks to be about $4100 + $1800 core(and a 3YR 100,000 mile warranty). Personally I wouldn't worry about putting in a used 6.8 V10 if it were my vehicle because it has a reputation for being very reliable.
What does my egr valve look like (if I have one)? I was looking, but nothing says egr valve : ) It is an 02. The eighth letter vin is S. I guess I will need to replace the oil pump too as that seems to be what probably started this whole mess.
Egr valve is on the very back of the intake behind the throttle body...and yes yours has one... stupp like that, intake, throttle body, valve covers...etc. on the outside of the motor can be swapped over to any motor you find
Just to add: the other thing to consider is that if you destroy the engine by running it till it dies you may not have a good core for exchange. Just a thought.
As a mechanic I have to ask....have you actually had this looked at by a competent technician?
There are many things that can make knocking sounds and the few minutes worth of labor are nothing compared with the cost of a new engine.
I would not recommend driving the truck if it is indeed knocking. If the engine is destroyed you will lose it as a core plus if it fails at a crucial time it could possibly be a safety issue.
I believe that the mechanics are competent. I also don't think they have taken the time to properly listen to the situation (or knock) and that they get to the 'metal in oil' part and stop listening to me. Do you have any suggestions as to what I should check/look for? I have not put it back together and driven it yet.
