3.03 transmission linkage is stuck

I have 1964 with 262 engine and 3.03 transmission. The truck is stuck in 1st gear. It was shifting OK for a while. It's now stuck in 1st. It was stuck in 2nd earlier today. Then it cleared up. Now stuck in 1st.

The shifter lever on the column is sloppy. I can't budge the lever on the transmission with my hands.

Any ideas? Is there a post somewhere on this site that would walk me through this?

Thanks,

Cary

Please, when asking questions, list all the pertinent info. I had to search thru your older posts to find out whether your truck is 2WD or 4WD.

At the bottom of the steering column under the hood are the two manual control selector levers that the shift rods from the trans attach to.

In each one of these levers is a rubber bushing and insulator. The bushings age crack, and/or fall apart, causing the shift lever to bind up.

Try moving the first/reverse lever by hand to free it up. If so, the bushings are his-tor-ee!

C3TZ-7343-A .. Bushing & Insulator Kit-One kit does both levers / Obsolete

Applications: 1961/64 F100/250 2WD 223/262 I-6 & 292.

ANTIQUE AUTO SUPPLY in Arlington TX has 6 = 817-275-2381.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 142 = 800-476-9653.

Cary grab a carpenters hammer hook the claws on the lever closest to the firewall and give it a yank. It should free up.

Pull the shift lever towards the steering wheel when coming out of 1st, making sure it is all the way in neutral before trying to complete the H shift pattern into 2nd when driving.

Mr. Wilson has listed correctly I might add, the parts needed if you want to rebuild the shift arms.

Thanks, ND. I'll put that in the next time.

So - I disconnected the rod from the first/reverse lever. I can easily move the lever that is connected to the steering column. However, the lever on the transmission will not budge. I can move the second/third lever on the transmission easily with its rod connected. What does that mean?

Once you remove shift rods from the column's selector levers, they'll be EZ to move, because the rods are no longer attached to them.

The two levers on the trans connect to the two shift forks that are inside the trans and ride on shift rails.

Remove the shift rods from the trans, remove the top cover plate, see if you can move the forks by hand.

Look on the rails, see if the 3 (per rail) interlock pins and interlock coil springs (one per rail) are still in place.

The two levers on the transmission seem to have two positions they can be in. So the first/reverse lever could be in reverse or first. The second/third lever could be in second or third.

If the first/reverse lever is in first, and the second/third lever is in second, what gear is the transmission in? Where is neutral? How do the two levers work together?

When each lever is halfway it is in neutral. There is a H pattern, if the inside is in the crossbar position it is in neutral.
