New X owner checking in

After a few months of looking I purchased a 2005 EB PSD X two weeks ago. Living in Illinois, every used X I found had either rust issues, was previously wrecked, had lots of wear N tear but were listed as clean, or "featured" extra wiring that was downright scary! I was growing tired of looking and considering buying a new 6 passenger F250 Lariat when I fell into the X I bought.

A bit about me. I am a Veteran, married to a wonderful woman, and I have 4 kids ranging from 1-11yrs old. Two of them are foster kids that I am currently in the process of adopting.
I used to be into roadcourse trackdays with a track prepped Honda S2000, but I recently sold my toys (S2000 and Mini Cooper S) in order to haul more kids and get into ATVing/camping with the family.
I have a 30 foot (half ton towable...lol) toyhauler. I mistakenly purchased a 2008 Tundra Double cab last fall to pull it. My family was sandwiched in the truck and it barely could pull the camper over 60mph. (averaged 7.6mpg!)
So I decided to upgrade my tow rig and bought an X. It has affectionately been named the " Big Daddy Bus" by my 2 year old daughter

The X has a few mods from the previous owner
1. 4" turbo back exhaust
2. 2008-2010 20inch F250 super Duty wheels with wheel spacers
3. Air raid intake
4. Kenwood NAV/DVD touchscreen radio
5. Monroe Reflex shocks
6. steering stabilizer
7. dealer told me it had a leveling kit, I dont think it does
8. weather tech floormats and cargo mat

So far I have
1. put new high lift rear hatch struts on it
2. bought a matching spare

My plans include
1. front tinted windows
2. SCT livewire and Innovative tune
3. head studs
4. flushing all the fluids
5. Cross Enterprises rear bumper/tire carrier/Jerry can rack

I have learned a ton on the site in just a couple weeks, and I look forward to learning more and helping other with their X's.

Here's my X (bought with 90,000 miles) , the toyhauler, and the limp pulling Tundra that started the search for it

Welcome to the club. You now have the right tool for the job.

I have to laugh every time I see "half ton towable", in almost every case it's a huge stretch and often downright dangerous.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to pulling with the X for the first time in April

Having never towed before, I took the manufacturers word (both Toyota and Forest River), and it cost me when I traded in the Tundra after just a few months.
That truck was rated at 8100lbs towing capacity, but that sure doesn't account for an 11 foot high trailer at highway speeds. The truck felt fine in town and up to 55mph, then it got ugly....and that was towing under 7,000lbs. Oh well, live and learn

Just an FYI on the 2008-2010 rims. Behind them are wheel spacers to make them work. The offset changed in 2005 on the F-250's. The spacers will reduce your overall tow capacity rating for the axles. Not sure how much but you may want to research further for peace of mind. The rims look really nice though.

Thanks, and thanks for the info

The most I see myself towing in the next couple years is 8K lbs so I am sure I am ok.

Not that your post implies this, but personally I love all the people who are scared to death of spacers. Go to any big road race at Road America, Watkins Glen, etc and look at the several hundred thousand dollar team Porsche cars running spacers at 170mph

I'm curious now what the impact these wheels have if I ever upgrade to a bigger toyhauler

Nice ride. I also am an Ex Newbe and probably have a dumb question. What are head studs and what are their benefits.

Congrats on the X Bigdaddybus!

Cpoer, head studs are one of the weak links on the 6.0 as they are "torque to yield" bolts and stretch with just the right amount of pressure. When "studded" with ARP studs they allow the heads to stand up to a higher range of pressure before the heads lift/warp.

The 7.3 has 6 studs per cylinder (18 in each head) whereas the 6.0 has 4 per cylinder (10 in each head); this is why you NEVER hear of a 7.3 blowing headgaskets.
